Enduring Connections
Liberia - Land of the Free

America’s First Colony

Preceding the US colonization of Hawaii and even the annexation of California, In 1821, Liberia was the first colony established in the United States. Under the blessing of James Madison and James Monroe, The American Colonization Society (ACS) was born. The plan for Liberia was simple - to utilize the country as a “new home” for formerly enslaved people and Free Blacks, under the support of abolitionists and slave masters alike, who became fearful of a growing and possibly violent Black population. Seeking the promise of racial freedom in this new land, over 18,000 Black Americans crossed over to Liberia. There they formed an Americo-Liberian society, seperate from the indigenous Liberians who lived there. By 1840, American support for the colony wanned, and on July 26, 1847, a group of eleven signatories declared Liberia an independent nation. Yet, the small Americo-Liberian society would continue to politically dominate the nation, leading to the First and Second Civil Wars in the country.

Today in 2025, I’m in North Carolina taking photos of Rogerlyne. Born in Liberia and raised in the United States, she tells me distant memories of the second civil war. Hearing a first hand account of conflict that was responsible for the deaths of 50,000 people and displacement of thousands more, it can be easy to get wrapped in the tragedy of war and lose focus from the person in front of you. Yet, Rogerlyne makes it clear that she has a story to share, and that history does not define her or her home.

For Rogerlyne her time in the US had been an opportunity to build wealth and knowledge. Gifts she can take back to her home country.

On the 4th of July it is easy to sell a simple story of The United States. To look at our map and ignore the complexities that lie within and outside our borders. With these photos I wanted to capture a history that is not often told. If The United States is meant to be a tapestry made from various peoples and cultures then let’s hold it to the light and examine it properly.
