#SpeyWithUWOTF - Spey Cast Categories

There are two Spey cast categories. Touch-and-Go Spey casting uses a brief water anchor and smooth, continuous motion to load the rod and deliver the cast. Sustained Anchor Spey casting keeps the line anchored on the water longer, allowing easier rod loading and better handling of heavy flies and sink tips.

UWOTF Education is about elevating women fishing instructors, empowering anglers, and breaking down stereotypes about who can teach and lead in the fishing community.

This education is brought to you by @unitedwomenonthefly, @flyfishinstruct, @ifishibelong, and Heather Hodson @northwestflygirl.

Yesterday Jon and I had the pleasure of hosting last year’s Rogue Spey Clave Grand Prize raffle winners @shajuniper and @tjorton

There couldn’t have been more deserving winners of this trip, as Sha and TJ happen to be two longtime local anglers who have been supporting the Southern Oregon fly fishing community for many years, and the Rogue is their beloved home water.

Thanks to everyone who supports the Clave — this is what it’s all about. See you July 31 2027 at Griffin Park.

#SpeyWithUWOTF - Own Your Spey Cast | Let's Bust Some Myths

Think you need to cast a country mile, dredge the bottom, or have the perfect cast to catch a steelhead? Think again.

One of the biggest misconceptions about Spey fishing is that MORE is always BETTER.

More distance. More depth. More power.

But successful Spey fishing isn't always about doing more. It's about understanding the water, making an effective presentation, and fishing with intention.

This October, we're getting back to the fundamentals, breaking down common misconceptions, and helping you build confidence in your cast.

Remember: The best cast isn't necessarily the longest cast. It's the one that fishes effectively.

What's the biggest misconception you had when you started Spey fishing?

UWOTF Education is about highlighting women fishing instructors and empowering anglers to lean to be more confident and competent on the water.

#SpeyWithUWOTF - Beginner's Guide to Choosing a Tip for a Spey Set-Up

Choosing the right tip for your Spey setup is simple. After your Spey head, attach either a sink tip, poly leader, or mono leader, depending on your setup. With a Skagit setup, you’ll typically add a floating or sinking tip. The right tip helps transfer energy smoothly, turn over your fly, and get it to the desired depth quickly and efficiently.

Always ask yourself where in the water column do you want to fish your fly. Scroll through the post to learn more about Skagit heads and tips.

Stay tuned for more Spey education. UWOTF Education is about highlighting women fishing instructors and empowering anglers to lean to be more confident and competent on the water. Tuesday Tips with @unitedwomenonthefly. How to Choose a Spey Head: Don’t overthink your Spey setup. At the end of the day, you really only need to choose between two basic heads:

Scandi – for lighter tips, smaller flies, and fishing the surface or upper water column.

Skagit – for heavier tips, big flies, and getting deeper in the water.

Sure, there are hybrids and specialty heads out there… but Scandi and Skagit are the two most common, and they’ll cover 95% of what you want to do. Keep it simple. Pick the one that matches where you want your fly to swim, get on the water, and go swing.

Stay tuned for more education on spey tips, leaders, casting and fishing the fly. #UWOTFEducation is about highlighting women fishing instructors and empowering anglers to learn to be more confident and competent on the water.

Spey Setup 101: Know Your System - A Spey setup can feel intimidating, but it’s really just a system to get your fly where it needs to be. The main components are backing, running line, head, tip, leader, and fly.

Once you understand how each piece works together, a Spey setup becomes simple and adaptable, just match it to your fly, desired depth of water to fish, and style.

Stay tuned for more education on heads, tips and leaders.

Rogue Spey Clave 2026 -

What a great opportunity to connect with local businesses, learn from industry pros, and cast rods from companies all throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

We want to say thank you to the individuals who took the time to put this event together and those who chose to attend. @jonbonhazlett & @daxmessett did a great job gathering and coordinating the vendors who made this possible.

We’re already stoked on next year and suggest that those who didn’t get a chance to attend, put a note in the calendar!
