Award-winning, Sunday Times bestselling Irish author.
Debut novel - NESTING

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

It’s Irish Book Week, which seems like a perfectly good excuse to talk about six Irish authors I’m very happy to have in my reading life. ☘️📚

Sally Rooney, Roisín O’Donnell, Louise Kennedy, Niall Williams, Colm Tóibín and the mighty Claire Keegan.

All of these authors have broken my heart, have made me think about their characters long after I’ve finished reading, and some have reminded me just how much can be done with a sentence or two and a very good understanding of human nature.

Claire Keegan, in particular, deserves her own category. I’m not sure I’ll ever stop recommending her to people. (You’re welcome. Or I’m sorry, depending on how emotionally robust you’re feeling.)

Roisin O’Donnell better be writing another novel because I am still thinking about Nesting and I read it in January!

Louise Kennedy followed up the wonder that is Trespasses with Stations and it is just so so good.

Niall Williams… if there is a better place to live in my mind than Faha, I don’t want to believe it.

Colm Toibin, obviously a genius.

Sally Rooney’s Normal People kept me up late into the night when I first read it. I’ll keep buying her books forever 🇵🇸

I’m always going to be a sucker for a book that gets under your skin without making a great song and dance about it. And Irish writers seem to have this particular talent in spades.

Patchett’s sister, Softball McFluff (aka Softie), is also a fan of Irish literature. Though, in her case, I suspect it’s less about the writing and more about the excellent opportunities it provides for a cosy repose. 🙄

So, in honour of Irish Book Week, tell me: who are your favourite Irish authors? I’m always happy to add another book to the pile. As if I needed an excuse. ☘️

Happy Irish Book Week! To celebrate, I’ve put together a rundown of my favourite Irish books, bookstores, and authors:

Favourite Irish bookstore: @thebookcentrewexford. My childhood haunt and what I mentally picture every time I think of a bookstore.

Favourite Irish author: This changes every time I pick up a book, but currently it’s Martina Devlin.

All-time favourite Irish lit fic book: LAND by Maggie O’Farrell (if you haven’t read it, fix that immediately).

Underrated favourite: EXILE by Aimee Walsh, a coming-of-age contemporary fic novel with heavy themes but excellent writing.

Favourite Irish release of this year: STATIONS by Louise Kennedy. The last time I was in London, I couldn’t help looking around corners and down the tube, searching for Red.

Want to read: The River Capture by Mary Costello.

What books being published today do you think people will still be reading in 100 years?

I always find myself wondering which books from our generation will eventually earn that elusive classic status. The books studied in classrooms, endlessly analysed, rediscovered by new generations and still sitting on bookshelves a century from now.

These are some of the ones I’d put my money on. Of course, this is entirely my opinion qnd I already know you’re going to have thoughts. 😂

Do you agree with any?

I bought my Kindle 2 years ago this summer, and it’s still one of my all-time favorite purchases.

Yes, I was the girl who said, “buying a Kindle means I’ll save money on books”… 🤪

And maybe it did, but I still need a copy of the physical books that have stolen my heart. Here are just some of them.

Roisín O'Donnell, author of Nesting and winner of the inaugural BBC Radio 2 Book Club Award flew over to Stirling to join Sara Cox and Val McDermid for a special interview live from Radio 2 in the Park. Roisín spoke about finding her confidence as a writer, the experience of publishing her first novel, and what happens when you try to carry a British Book Award in your hand luggage...

The latest episode of the BBC Radio 2 Book Club is available now on BBC Sounds or wherever you get your podcasts.

❤️📚FRIDAY FAVOURITE📚❤️

Time for another #FridayFavourite and this time in the form of the powerful and emotional #Nesting by @roisinodonnellwriter @scribneruk

This book is one that took my breath away, had my heart pounding in my chest and literally made me feel every emotion possible. Roisin excels in covering such an important area that unfortunately exists in the world today, and as a debut read it is very safe to say I can’t wait to see what comes next from this author.

I couldn’t resist picking up the special @goldsborobooks edition of this book because I adored it so much. This is a rollercoaster of a read and is one that will stay in my heart forever❤️

Do you have a book that holds a special place in your heart?

We try not to read the same books as each other so we can cover more ground but sometimes a book is so good we force it into each other’s hands. And then we argue over who gets to put them on their Favourites Shelf.
