Scene City by Róisín Tapponi is available now! This irreverent debut novel from a startling new talent explores hedonism and heritage among the cold glitz of London’s commercial art world Romy, an art history student, is committed to a headlong and accelerating pursuit of pleasure in the rarefied air of the capital’s art scene. Her sense of self fraying in this whirligig of decadence, she discovers in writing a way to keep her feet on the ground. Soon, Romy and her merry band of gays discover they are immersed in, of all unlikely things, the maelstrom of a developing novel. "Fancy being a fly on the walls of the art world? Then this is the book for you ... the writing scintillates." – Monocle

Weekend Read! 📚🍸🎨✨ "Scene City" by Róisín Tapponi 🇮🇪🇮🇶🇬🇧 Art, decadence, friendship, identity and a novel within a novel. Welcome to "Scene City". 👀📖 Romy is an art history student throwing herself headfirst into the pleasure and chaos of London’s commercial art scene. Surrounded by glamour, parties and a merry band of friends, she finds her sense of self beginning to fray. Then she starts writing. Before long, Romy and her friends discover they have somehow become characters in a developing novel, sending them into an entertaining whirl of questions about authorship, identity and whether searching for meaning really needs to get in the way of having a good time. 🍸🎨💃 Blending the spirit of Laurence Sterne with the worlds of Eve Babitz and Truman Capote, "Scene City" is an irreverent debut about hedonism, heritage and the cold glitz of the London art world. And we’re particularly delighted to have an Irish connection to this one. 🇮🇪💚 Róisín Tapponi is Assyrian Iraqi and Irish, and is a writer, curator and film programmer based in London. At just 25, she completed her PhD in History of Art at the University of St Andrews. She has contributed to publications including frieze, Artforum, The Guardian and Vogue, and was named one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 for Europe. 🎨📚✨ "Scene City" marks the arrival of a striking new Irish voice on the literary scene. Perfect for readers who love art, parties, clever writing, messy friendships and novels that refuse to behave themselves. 🥂📖 📍 Find your next great read with us on Main Street, Castlebar! #WeekendRead #SceneCity #RoisinTapponi #IrishAuthor #IrishWriter #IrishConnection #IrishLiterature #ReadIrish #LoveIrishBooks #IrishReaders #MayoReaders #TheCastleBookshop #Castlebar #Mayo #BookstagramIreland #ContemporaryFiction #LiteraryFiction #ArtFiction #ArtWorld #ArtAndLiterature #BookRecommendations #IndieBookshop #ShopLocalMayo #ReadingCommunity #NewBooks #IrishBooks 🇮🇪📚🎨

The Margate Bookshop invites you to... SCENE CITY WITH RÓISÍN TAPPONI THURSDAY, 22 OCTOBER Writer and film programmer Róisín Tapponi discusses her decadent debut novel Scene City, an insider’s tale of hedonism and identity amid the hollow gold of the London art world. 7-9PM FORT ROAD BAR The effervescent first novel from film programmer and writer Róisín Tapponi, Scene City follows art history student Romy into the belly of the beast that is London’s commercial art world. At risk of becoming too caught up in the rarefied glamour of it all, she tries to earth herself by writing what she sees, and soon begins developing a storyline starring her own merry band of gays... and a version of herself. Dynamic, smart and gossipy in the style of Babitz or Capote, Scene City is a book about authorship, authenticity and whether the search for meaning and the pursuit of pleasure are at all compatible. Róisín Tapponi is an academic, curator and founder of Shasha Movies, an independent streaming platform for South-West Asian and North African film and video. As a writer and critic she has contributed to frieze, Artforum, The Guardian, Vogue and more, and has delivered talks on film at institutions such as BAFTA, Venice Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival, CPH:DOX and Sheffield Doc Fest. She’ll be talking all-things Scene City in conversation with Margate’s own Robert Diament, host of the Talk Art podcast and Director of Carl Freedman Gallery and Counter Editions. This event will be recorded for Talk Art Live podcast. Booking essential. Free tickets available via Eventbrite – link in bio.
