Something Wilder…my thoughts.

Having loved The Honeymooners, I was excited to read this one… two years ago when I bought it….

But I just couldn’t get into it, I hate to DNF so I popped it back on the TBR shelf, I picked it up last month and could not put it down- I fell in love with both Lily and Leo and all of them actually. And I loved the adventure action storyline; probably the closest I will come to Indiana Jones!

Lily and Leo have one perfect summer and then he disappears without a trace…an irony that isn’t lost on Lily who is the daughter of the most famous treasure hunter! Despite it hurting with every bone of her being, when he passes away she sets up her own treasure hunt business with best friend, Nicole.
One hot summer, a lads group arrives to complete the trails and who does it contain; none other than the man she has spent ten years trying not to think about let alone find. Questioning whether she can leave him out in the canyon’s the trip begins and all at once, she knows it’s not going to be a trip like the others. Camping under the stars has always been the rugged and testing part of the excursions but all of a sudden there is a deeply romantic element throw in a couple of life risking activities, and they find there is more to explore than the land.
I liked the mystery element involved too and found myself trying to solve the clues alongside them, which bought the group to life, I liked how just when you thought they were about to give up something small would go their way and they were back in the game, so to speak.

I have gone a little Wilder with my pairing this time too; it’s from a fabulous hidden bar @oldtownlaundrybar and it’s called the Monkey King. Whilst there are no monkeys in the Wild West, I can well imagine this cheeky one wrecking havoc on a camping trip! The recipe itself is a secret you’ll have to find out…perfect for a book about treasure hunting but I will tell you anything that is served in a coconut with a flaming banana is a treasure worth seeking!

Do you come back to books if at first you don’t succeed?

Swept Away…my thoughts.

As we come to expect from Beth, it’s a book with heart and more than a touch of romcom humour; although I go through this regularly with Beth’s books, this might be my favourite yet! Zeke and Lexi realise their one night liaison is more than they bargained for when they wake up to discover their boat is no longer moored in sleepy Gilmouth but bobbing along in the Northern Sea. The Merry Doormouse was cosy enough for evening cuddles and snuggles but she isn’t built to sail the seas, it becomes a tale of survival, secrets and sea views, and a stray seagull….and then one mega twist!

I loved every page, both Lexi and Zeke grow individually and together meaning they are both wonderful characters. For a book that focuses solely on two characters we still learn a lot about them in their thoughts about the people ‘back home’ in a way that is genuinely clever. I loved the relationship, the extreme situations where I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough and then the joy of the ending; pure writing perfection.

Whilst Zeke and Lexi love a proper gin and tonic, I paired it with this bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, from France…I wonder if the Merry Doormouse would have made it there?! I was sold on the label but the wine inside gave me just as much joy. A French Sauvignon Blanc is well worth a try- it has all the flavours you would expect but with a modern up to date approach, Ludovic Proust has spent his winemaking years finessing a new version of a classic; he travels the Loire Valley, Cognac and Bordeaux regions to secure the best cuve and it is absolutely worth it. The wines are all inspired by the mighty ocean and makes it the perfect pairing for a book where the ocean is very much a character in its own right. The intensity of the flavours match the intense environment that Zeke and Lexi find themselves in and I bet a glass of cool, crisp wine would have gone down a treat as they evade disaster after disaster.

Has a trip ever gone wrong for you?

The Happy Hour…my thoughts.

Jess is one of those wholesome characters that you just know you are going to love and wish the best for. She runs a stall in Greenwich market selling beautiful little trinkets, amongst her market friends; wait until this merry band pull together, it’s wonderful. She also works in No Vase Like Home, I already know I would spend a fortune in, and brings in fabulous characters like Felicity, who also has a story to be told. Jess is happy but maybe there is something missing…

One day a pickpocket brings her and Ash crashing together, quite literally and they agree to see what fate has in store for them by meeting up once a week at the same time. As the weeks progress, Jess starts to realise that she looks forward to this hour more than any other hour in the week; but does she know everything there is to know about this man who has crashed into her life?

I can’t say anymore without giving away a sizeable amount of the story but I was fully invested and flew through the pages until I got to know what happened…and it’s worth it! Cressida writes such lovely books from the Cornish coast to central London she has meet cute relationships absolutely nailed and I always fall in love with her characters- if you need cheering up, try this for a hug in a book!

Every now and again I mix it up with a cocktail instead of wine; this felt like a good story for that and not least because of its title. Jess takes a chance on Ash, he is out of her ordinary and out of her comfort zone…like a wine girl stepping away from the wine list. I picked this Lychee Daiquiri because nothing says happy hour like a daiquiri but the twist of the lychee made it refreshing and new. After a day of city exploring, this is the treat that was needed and matches perfectly with such a feel good book!

If you could spend one hour a week with anyone who would it be and why?
