The best kind of martini is a deeply resolute one. Zam Zam’s achieves this through just a spray of vermouth into a freezer chilled glass. Delightfully cold and wonderful every time.

Two drinks from Nightburger that fit the concept so well, and now seem obvious after-the-fact. First, a cherry coke manhanttan: Bourbon, coke syrup, amaro and cherries. The second, a root beer old fashioned: Rye, root beer syrup, montenegro, bitter bianco, root beer bitters and lime. Brilliant. The refined yet tongue in cheek nature of Ron Boyd’s drinks and Kim Alter’s cooking have kept me coming back in their now-ten years in business. Long live Nightbird, Linden Room, and everything they do.

While I likely opened this 2021 Mascot too early, drinking a wine like at House of Prime Rib is one of life’s greatest indulgences.

A great wine to drink now from their 2023 vintage. Cherry, subtle pine on the nose, with an acidic pomegranate and cranberry tart palate. Had this as part of Sons and Daughters beverage pairing and can’t think of a wine more analogous to their cooking. Just lovely.

Ten years ago, we opened the doors at Nightbird. It was definitely the hardest experience I think I've dealt with. I was raising money till the end, taking out big loans and a lot of micro loans with quick payback deadlines.

The buildout was supposed to take six months, but took over a year. I joke that we were on @eater_sf most anticipated list every season. We were very lucky to have a landlord that understood the roadblocks we kept running into (thank you to the Beguns).

We opened the doors without doing a friends-and-family, so we just slowly ramped up reservations till we got the swing of things. Thousands of services (and quail eggs) later, we are still trying to be better, trying to constantly evolve and continue to be a part of this amazing community.

We are lucky to go to the farmer's markets every day, cook next to professionals, and have a service staff that gives 100%. Thank you to all who helped build Nightbird, to the ones who have kept it running and the ones who keep coming back.

As we approach Nightbird’s 10 year anniversary this August, we’d like to take a moment to recognize the people that have gotten us here, beginning with a very important appreciation post!

Though his official title at Nightbird may be Director of Operations, Ron Boyd is a jack of all trades. With over 30 years of expertise in both back and front of house, Ron is able to see service from all points of view and direct with a singleminded, passionate focus on our guests’ experience.

We can gratefully credit Ron with the foundation of our incredible Beverage program, the thoughtful leadership of our Front of House team daily, the creation of our favorite staff meals, and every staff member having the song Unwritten stuck in our heads.

Ron’s contributions to Nightbird are innumerable, and often quiet. He fixes what’s broken, leads with thoughtful surety and efficiency, and jumps into any role required to make service run smoothly. We are beyond grateful!
