We are thrilled to welcome an exciting group of tenure- and practice-track faculty colleagues to Taubman College’s Urban Technology program this fall and winter. Please welcome Ron Bronson,
Assistant Professor of Practice in Urban Technology.

Ron Bronson’s work aligns service design with organizational complexity. He focuses on making complex things work better and ensuring technology serves people, especially in high-stakes environments. His work spans product management, agile delivery, and digital transformation. For two decades, he has led UX strategy, service design, content strategy, and AI-driven experiences across government, enterprise, and civic tech sectors.

Bronson has spoken at design and tech events around the world, including DrupalCon, An Event Apart, UX Research Toronto, Confab, and Rosenfeld Media events about UX and service design, interaction architecture, and the real-world challenges of building systems that impact people.

In winter 2024, Bronson developed and taught a service design course as an intermittent lecturer of urban technology at Taubman College. Over the semester, students conducted research, analyzed service contexts, and developed design and technology concepts to address urban needs. Partnering with Michigan’s chief growth officer and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, students worked on a real-world consulting project aimed at welcoming new residents to Michigan communities.

CHIMÆRA EVENT: A Parliament of Neighbors with @ronbronson, 3-5pm on saturday may 13th!

+˚ʚ♡ɞ˚+

“Bringing worldbuilding and speculative futures into community spaces. What if governance and community were a blank canvas? How would we choose to exist, live & play together?

So much of reimagination of cities focuses on physical infrastructure, but this interactive experience will ask us to think not about stuff and things, but the people who make it up.

I've seen lots of speculative design that thinks about large-scale reimagination, but I want to zoom way more & ask us to think about what it means to govern, and what our responsibilities are to our neighbors.

I am still working out what form it'll take, but I'm expecting something 1) folks can react to & 2) participate in even if you're not local.”

As tech giants race to dominate every facet of human creativity under the banner of “innovation and progress” Joint Futures onboards individuals who stand for critical transformations in how we learn from the past, live the present, imagine, and create more holistic, sustainable and positive futures.

Joint Frontiers aims to sustain an antifragile approach to polycrises and perilous times.

🎯 We envision embracing pluriversal approaches to design, acknowledging that countless futures await us, each deserving of thoughtful consideration amidst our overlapping crises.

✨We aim to traverse the edges of the design landscape, observing emerging practices and learning from innovative experiments that go beyond mainstream paradigms.

🙌🏼 We will map how design can influence corporations to achieve a brighter future for all—not to glorify Design but to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges ahead as we strive to create a more joyful and positive path (far from human addiction, tech fadigue and depression).

Let’s come together to dream of a vibrant community! What topics should a timely design community of practice engage with, and what spaces should we cultivate?

Join us at the new boutique hotel Kinship Landing to hear about the collaborative design process and opening Kinship! Our panel includes the all-local creative teams -- architecture + interior design, creative direction + branding, craft millwork and two of the co-founders and owners -- to discuss the role branding and experiential design play in building an indelible sense of place and an immediate impact on the community.

You'll get a behind-the-scenes look at the collaborative process, how design systems need to work across disciplines, and maybe a few stories of what it's like to open a hotel in a pandemic. After the discussion, stick around for an intermission with catered bites and bevs from Homa Cafe + Bar, tours of the hotel and a chance to chat with the teams.

This talk is 1️⃣ of our Design Talk Double Feature on Oct. 2, so save your seat for our 2️⃣ featured talk by dynamic speaker and design director Ron Bronson!

🎟 🎟 This is a paid event with a capacity limit, so we recommend getting a Design Week Pass and automatic registration to all paid Design Week events! You'll save 30%, get priority seating if the event is sold out, and be entered for passholder perk giveaways. 🎟 🎟

Ron Bronson, Portland, Oregon

I’m currently the Director of Design at 18F, which is a technology and design consultancy for and within the federal government. I manage a team of design managers, UX designers, product designers, service designers & content strategists working in the federal government on large-scale digital transformation.

While the scale of my work now is unparalleled and I’ve done a lot of interesting things in my career, I’m most proud of my time in local government in Bloomington, Indiana. I led the design of an overhaul of a decade-old municipal website, and it was a very scrappy in-house team migrating from a custom CMS to Drupal. The entire project took nearly two years, but the satisfaction of going through multiple rounds of user feedback involving the public; teaching civil servants a new way to manage their own content; and actively involving people at every stage was incredibly rewarding. Winning awards was cool, but the best part was people seeing you at the grocery store or at parties and telling you they were able to find something a lot easier than they were able to before. I’ve gained an immense amount of satisfaction from knowing I can work on things that make people's lives a little better.

Put your best guess in the comments below 👇🏽

In addition to (most) of the above, Ron's also a design director and dynamic speaker who's presented at over 50 design and tech events around the globe since 2017. In his Design Week talk, he’ll examine the ways designers shape the world around them. We can marvel at how much progress has been made in a relatively short time to connect the world, while noticing the impacts of those changes on everyday life. Do designers deserve a share of the blame for consequences of design? If so, what can be done about it? Ron will take us through ways to reimagine how we create products, practices, systems, and services.

🎟 Design Week Pass: cosdesignweek.com/tickets

INSIDER TIP: The Design Week Pass saves you over 30% off and includes this talk AND all other Design Week events + special passholder giveaways.

Look at that big papi 🥔 from @miaminicepdx. Met up with @denasaurusrex and of course @ronbronson. Fed a kitten and pretended she was a baby Moo. Explored the coast with @fielder.linda. Saw the @portlandrosegardens (+ other awesome forrests and gardens), spied on an engagement photo shoot on the beach, walked around Neskowin with Linda and Sunny, some more food from Peet’s and @benandesthers , and finishing off the photo dump with falling off a building at @peculiarium.pdx
