Improving joint stability doesn’t just mean strengthening. Strength obviously matters, but learning how to actually use this strength and control your movement matters just as much.

A few years ago I couldn’t complete a single wall walk without my elbows subluxing (as an ex-gymnast, that was pretty humbling 🥲).

I spent a long time going right back to basics, gradually exposing my joints to positions they didn’t trust yet and building from there.

One thing I’ve noticed over that time is that as my ability to control movements like this has improved, the frequency of my elbow subluxations has reduced dramatically.

This exercise definitely isn’t one I’d recommend as a starting point, but working through progressions to challenge my stability, proprioception and control in a way that was appropriate for me specifically has massively improved my ability to manage load in these positions.

If you’re dealing with hypermobility or joint instability, don’t make the mistake of judging yourself on what someone else is doing and thinking you just need to ‘work harder’. You may just need someone to help you find the right starting point and build up in a way that challenges you.

How to really start working on your snatch if you’re a class-goer Crossfitter ?

⬇️Pick 2 or 3 and run them for 4-5 weeks 👌🏻

Choose a technical primer that exaggerates what you’re trying to achieve. Tall snatches for aggressive pull under ? Muscle snatches for a longer leg extension? Sots press for mobility and strength in your catch position?

Choose a start position you feel weaker in, could be hang, could be hip.

Place a constraint on your lift. A slow eccentric, a touch and go, or no foot movement : pretty versatile one that tends to solve several things at once.

Add a pause where your technique breaks down (off floor, above knee, below knee)

Add an overhead squat to every snatch you do if you loathe the bottom position

Hit a hard pull variation to build strength: snatch deadlifts, RDLs, rows. Being too strong is very rarely a problem 👌🏻

I’ve avoided posting about my recent circumstances on this page because honestly I wasn’t sure it was adding anything useful - this account has always been about helping other people, not documenting my own life.

But the more I’ve reflected on it, the more I’ve realised this journey is very relevant to the people I hope this page reaches - those learning to work with their bodies rather than constantly feeling like they’re fighting against them.

So, here’s the short version:

Last year, a freak accident during a warm-up ended with my ankle dislocating. For most people it probably would have been a bad sprain or a broken bone, but because I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome it resulted in four torn ligaments. Despite more than a year of determination whilst trying absolutely everything I could my ankle just couldn’t heal itself without surgery.

Earlier this month I had a major ankle reconstruction with additional internal bracing being drilled in to stabilise the joint. This was/is being followed by a long period of immobilisation, non weight-bearing and up to a year of rehab (although hopefully I’ll be very much up and about within 6 months or so 🤞🏽).

I’ve had SO many setbacks previously where I’ve always just picked myself up and carried on, but I’ll admit there have been many moments over the last year where I’ve been closer than ever to giving up on my body. Fortunately somewhere along the way my mindset completely shifted.

I’ve stopped trying to out train my genetics or ‘keep up’ with able-bodied people around me. Instead I’m understanding my own complexities and working with them to see just how capable I can become even with these challenges (whilst still getting to do cool things).

And honestly that feels kind of exciting in a new way.

So, if you see a few more mobility aids, rehab updates and slightly chaotic recovery moments appearing on this page (starting with me taking my new iWalk for a spin ✌🏽) don’t worry, this is still a strength page.

Just one that’s trying to be a little more open-minded and honest about what strength can look like.
