#TheAdventurist | Urvi Kothari, an art writer travels through the Netherlands and encounters Vincent van Gogh in two very different ways. Her journey began at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, where she explored the extraordinary collection of his works. Later, miles away in Brabant, the landscapes of Nuenen offered a more immersive encounter with the artist and his legacy. Here, she discovered the Van Gogh-Roosegaarde Cycle Path, a 600-metre stretch between Eindhoven and Nuenen that transforms after sunset. Designed by Dutch artist and innovator @daanroosegaarde the path is embedded with thousands of luminous stones that glow in the darkness, inspired by Van Gogh’s The Starry Night.

Begun as part of efforts to celebrate Van Gogh’s heritage and bring his artistic spirit into the Netherlands’ landscape where he walked, the cycle path becomes a Van Gogh painting every night. The stones absorb energy during the day and glow like stars after dark, creating a magical, starry trail for cyclists and pedestrians bringing ‘The Starry Night’ to life beneath your wheels.

Read @urvi_kotharii story, which sits at the intersection of adventure + art, and often a reminder that art doesn’t always belong inside a museum. Sometimes, you discover it on a road beneath your feet, glowing beneath a sky full of stars.

Communicating AQ inspiration - Day 6
Welcome back everyone! Hope you had a good (and certainly if you are in Europe currently) a chill weekend!
For day 6 we are heading to the Netherlands 🇳🇱 and to Rotterdam to check out Smog Free Rings - A slightly different kind of carbon on a ring! 💍
Similar in ways to day 2's Air-Ink, the rings were created by sucking particulate pollution out of the air - in this case by one of Dan's other inventions - Smog Free Tower.
Each ring represents 1,000 m3 of cubic air cleaned and 'donated' back to the city. The ring is now part of the permanent collections of several museums including the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Biosphere Environment Museum in Montreal.

In a world governed by algorithms, data, and prediction, @DaanRoosegaarde believes our greatest capacity for change begins with wonder. The Dutch artist and innovator is celebrated for large-scale public works that fuse art, science, and technology, making invisible forces—from air pollution to climate change and biodiversity loss—visible, tangible, and deeply human.

Collaborating with scientists, engineers, and organisations including @NASA and @europeanspaceagency, he creates luminous landscapes and pioneering environmental projects that challenge how we experience the world. Convinced that emotion drives action more powerfully than facts alone, Roosegaarde continues to reshape the relationship between creativity, nature, and innovation.

Read our interview to discover why beauty, curiosity, and collaboration are the foundations of Roosegaarde vision for the future.

Water is everywhere. A new WATERLICHT is coming to Europe soon 💙

As a Dutchman, I have always lived surrounded by water. As a kid, we were only allowed to play outside once we had our swimming diploma. Water was simply part of growing up.

My Chinese friends tell me I am crazy. Who lives below sea level? Very dangerous! But the Dutch have been doing it for hundreds of years. We don’t move to Germany or to the hills. We stay in the lowlands and use our creativity and engineering to create a home.

Now our world is changing. Global sea levels could rise by around 2 metres by 2100. But somehow these numbers don’t create change. They’re too abstract.

So when the Dutch Waterschappen, the water authorities who oversee all the pumps and dikes, asked me to create more water awareness, I asked myself: what if they did nothing? What if they all went to the Maldives for a year, did not reply their emails or phones?

How high would the water rise?

That became WATERLICHT, a flood of light showing how high the water could reach.

WATERLICHT has travelled through 12 countries. Now it is returning to Europe, at a time when our relationship with water feels more important than ever.
I can’t wait to see people step into its blue light again. They look up, walk through the glowing waves and reach for the light.

Being inside WATERLICHT is a bit eerie. Is this our future? But it is also hopeful, because it is not our future yet.

We fight against water. We learn from water. We live with water.

Standing underneath WATERLICHT, I realise that the most important thing is not to be scared about our future, but to stay curious. By turning rising water into an experience, we make an invisible future something people can feel today.

And when we can feel the future, we can start imagining a better one together.

LIGHTS OFF. STARS ON.
