I thought my first king was a big deal, then I hooked this beast. This bit brighter egg filled hen absolutely beat me up in a real snaggy hole solo. Thankfully I had a nice area to beach her without my net that was stuck at the very top of the hole still. 36-1/2ā€ wild superior chunker. These kings are something else. Fun way to start fall fishing off.

My first king ever, wow do these fish tug and so much differently then other anadromnous fish. After landing a nice lake run brown, the hole I was fishing turned into a frenzy. Kings cannon balling left and right. It took me not long to hook and loose 2 much larger ones then this. I then beefed up my leader and I was finally able to manage another hookup.

Although this fish didn’t leap quite as much as the ones that got off it still was one of the most intense fish fights I’ve had. There just sheer power and ability to go to where they want to go is unmatched. You just can’t quite turn them like a steelhead with there thicker bodies. Safe to say this fish was all over the hole and actually managed to get going up river into some fast water pretty good. Thankfully he hit the net and I had my first king ever. What cool fish and even sweeter to make it a wild superior fish for the first !

Ben is one of our cooks—and although he’s been fishing his entire life, he had never tried fly fishing.

So we teamed him up with Lance from @rootriverrodco to see if a lifelong fisherman could catch his first trout on a fly rod.

Safe to say, it was a pretty good morning on the river. šŸŽ£

Heading to August with low clear flows I thought I was in for some of the worse bass fishing of the season on the river. However despite the conditions the topwater bite the last 2 weeks has been on fire. The cooler nights and shorter days have helped bring water temps down. Even the bass were not really liking the 80 degree temps back in July.

That said the extreme low flow has still made navigating and fishing challenging at times. You got to bring a cast when fly fishing, fast and far casts on target is a must with these conditions. Although when it comes to together it’s a really sweet bite. Finding fish in shallow flats and throwing a boogle bug and Mr wiggly combo on them has been the ticket. Hardly moving it at times and waiting for the fish to come sip it. Seeing that wake and then little sip, to then set into a 3-4 pound bass is so cool to see. Then On windier days a boogle stripped fast or plopper has been great as well. Just as cool see that explosive aggressive blowup on that in contrast to the sip.
