Are your handlebars too wide?

Handlebar width is one of the easiest things to change on a bike and one of the most misunderstood. Riders chase a number they saw online, when the real question is what the bar does to their position and control.

Bar width serves Stability and Balance: it should let a rider sit central and relaxed, elbows out and ready, not stretched wide or cramped in. So as coaches, fit the bar to the rider in front of you. Trim in small steps, ride it, and watch the position before you cut again. You can always take more off. You can't put it back.

The past few months have been amazing!

Reflecting on an awesome summer with the team sharing the good times of riding mountain bikes with so many riders from around NZ and the world.
From coaching to teaching how to coach with @gsmountainbikecoaches & the @rotoruamountainbikeclub through to helping riders fall in love with the trails here in @rotoruanz and flipping the coin to participate in other courses and learn from others like Gabby and the @mtbskillsmethod as well as joining groups and having over the reigns in western China.
@_asher.hart has been epic to work alongside for another season and we wish him all the best for another season out there doing it - racing his third @uci_mtbworldseries enduro season as a privateer.

Thanks to all of the riders who chose us to help make their time on a bike better, our partners who we work with, and everyone out there that’s been up for a yarn who has seen us out on our bikes
🤜🤛

Things get a little quieter as we head into winter (and some of the best riding conditions) so get in touch if you have some goals you want to work towards whether it’s confidence, speed, or to explore some new trails.

Looking forward to next summer already with more exciting trips, progression, and time on the bike 🙏

It’s easy to confuse smooth practice with good learning. Blocked drills look tidy - riders execute well, coaches feel effective. GSMBC’s Principles of Teaching stress that safety and progression come from purposeful practice, not repetition for its own sake.

It’s easier to default to blocks because they’re easier to manage, easier to observe, and easier to explain. Random practice feels chaotic, and the slower progress can look like failure. In reality, that discomfort signals deeper learning.

Meta-analyses (e.g., Czyż et al., 2024) show that random practice produces a moderate overall advantage for adults when it comes to transfer-the ability to apply a skill in new conditions, not just repeat it where it was learned. That’s a meaningful difference in motor learning terms: enough to consistently tilt outcomes toward riders who train with variability.

Interestingly, the gains aren’t uniform across age groups. Older adults actually show the largest benefits, likely because random practice forces them to stay mentally engaged and problem-solve each rep. Younger learners, especially children, show smaller or negligible benefits, possibly because they’re still building baseline coordination and may get overwhelmed by too much variability.
