Techniques have a way of traveling with you.

I learned this baratoplata from mount from @michael_barger while training under @kennykimbjj . It stuck with me and became another option I could add to my game.

One of the best things about jiu-jitsu is that your game becomes a collection of lessons from the people you’ve shared the mats with.

Learn it. Make it yours. Pass it on.

Positional drilling teaches you something repetition alone can’t: how to make decisions when the answer isn’t predetermined.

Start from the same position, add resistance, and let the reactions change the problem. That’s where you learn to connect techniques instead of simply collecting them.

Don’t become attached to a technique. Become good at recognizing opportunities.

Have a plan. Read the reaction. Take what’s there.

One position can give you more than one answer.

The triangle is there. The arm is there. Understanding the position means recognizing your options without needing to force one particular finish.

Don’t just learn individual techniques. Learn how they connect.

See the position. Recognize the opportunity. Take what’s there.

You don’t always have to escape a bad position before you attack.

Sometimes the position your opponent believes is an advantage creates an opportunity somewhere else.

Stay composed. Understand the position. Look for what they’ve given you.

A threat from one direction can become an attack from another.

Getting your back taken doesn’t mean the exchange is over.

Jiu-jitsu teaches you to stay composed when the position turns against you. Address the control, create the opening, and turn defense back into offense.

Bad positions are problems, not conclusions.

Stay calm. Solve the problem. Keep moving.

Someone grabs your head. Now you have a problem to solve.

That’s one of the things I love about jiu-jitsu. You’re constantly being given problems, and you don’t get to choose which ones show up.

Recognize the problem. Find your answer. Act with purpose.

The more answers you build in training, the harder you become to put in a position where you have none.

Don’t fight force with force.

I push. He pushes back. That reaction gives me the answer.

Instead of trying to overpower him, I move out of the way, redirect the pressure, and let his momentum help create the takedown.

Sometimes good jiu-jitsu is less about making something happen and more about recognizing what your opponent is already giving you.

Create the reaction. Follow the energy. Go where they are not.

Choose your circle carefully.

The people around you will either reinforce your excuses or raise your standard.

That’s one of the things I love about jiu-jitsu. You find people willing to struggle together, challenge each other, expose weaknesses, share knowledge, and come back the next day ready to do it again.

Find good people. Do hard things together. Become harder to break.

Another morning at Rough Hands.

Every grip creates an opportunity. You just have to recognize it. 🥋

They reach for the head. Instead of fighting the position, use the Russian tie to create the angle, get behind to the body lock, and finish the trip.

That’s the art of grappling. Don’t force the position you want. Recognize what they give you and turn their control into your opportunity.

Russian tie → rear body lock → trip.

You can’t use your jiu-jitsu if you can’t get the fight to the ground.

There are a lot of ways to get there. Shots, throws, trips, pressure, power. This is one of mine.

Double unders. Close the distance. Body lock. Create pressure. Put them on the mat.

The takedown isn’t separate from your jiu-jitsu. It’s how you get to it.

Control the exchange from the start.

Whether it’s a takedown or a guard pull, the goal is the same: initiate contact and make your opponent respond to you instead of waiting to respond to them.

This is a concept @505ninjaleeroy taught me long before I ever stepped onto a jiu-jitsu mat: take the initiative and control where the fight goes.

Here, the guard pull establishes De La Riva and leads directly into the sweep.

Initiate. Control. Make them react.
