What’s in a name? Well coming from someone with a very unique one LET ME TELL YOU!

In Greek tradition we get named after our paternal grandparents. I was named Ero, after my grandmother. I adored her and it was an honor to have her name. BUT… I have never and will NEVER go by this name. EVER.

From Ero came Eroula, bc when you’re young they add an ending to names as a term of endearment ( similar to how in Spanish Melissa can be Melissita). From Eroula my mom nicknamed me Rou as a baby. Bless her for this.

Here’s where it gets confusing. In school everyone called me Eroula my whole life. (They butchered it in SO many ways and I was made fun of, even by adults). People in Greece laugh at me when I say my name is Eroula, bc I’m not a little girl anymore but I’ll be damned if anyone calls me Ero. Not allowed.

The people closest to me always called me Rou and as an adult I started only introducing myself as Rou because it was easier and it’s more ‘me.’

When I do anything with documents and I have to put Ero down, I hate it- sitting in a waiting room and having them call my name 😫.

So now I live with this crazy identity issue. Some people think my name is Eroula, some people think it’s Rou. Technically it’s neither.
It’s actually exhausting whenever I’m asked about my name.

I love being called Rou. Please don’t call me anything else. Unless you’re Greek and can say Eroula properly ☺️. But then I question sometimes when I do silly things like buy an initial necklace - do I buy an E or an R? It feels confusing living with this name situation.

I urge you to consider things like this when you name your kids. If you’re going to name them something for some sentimental reason but you plan to call them something else- please just don’t. Use it as a middle name. Let their government name on their birth certificate be a name that they’ll want to be called their whole life and that you intend to call them. Spare them the issues I’ve always faced. Traditions are very special, but you know what- having to live with a complicated name really is not fun.

Today is rainbow baby day.

When I lost my babies in 2019, I will always remember thinking my tears would never stop. I will always be sad, they still flow from time to time, and I hold this sadness written permanently in the pages of my life’s book. I also welcome and rejoice in my two rainbow babies, feeling that I am such a lucky mama. We open and heal out loud not only for ourselves, but to let our sisters know that they are not alone. My mantra was: I’m not ok, but I want to be ok. This hurts, I want to process, I’ll allow myself to vent the pain, and I want to see the beauty in life again.

I do think that touching such darkness makes us see the light differently—not better—just differently. I love you all, I support you all, and may you know that I am with you—there are many of us. you are not alone.
