We loved exploring the South Coast of Newfoundland and can’t wait to go back ❤️

Follow @roving.mapletales if you want to know more hidden gems to visit in Atlantic Canada 🇨🇦🦞

A lil fact about the place ⬇️
Rencontre East is one of the most isolated communities in Newfoundland with a population of just 115 people. There are no paved roads, no cars allowed on the ferry, and the nearest hospital is a 90-min boat ride away. Their motto says it all - “Isolated and Loving It”

How to get there ⬇️
⛴️ Take a ferry from Bay L’Argent - it runs daily except Wednesday, and it’s the only way in and out. You cannot take your car on the ferry. Once you’re there, get around by ATV or just explore by walk.

⚠️ We did a day trip from Bay L’Argent to Rencontre East. Day trips are only possible on Sunday, Tuesday and Friday until Oct 15th and the ferry schedule changes after that. So check the latest schedule before you plan your visit.

Things to do ⬇️
📍Boat tour on Rencontre Lake with a local operator ($50 per person)
📍Hike the boardwalk trail to Rencontre Lake 👉download @alltrails map for the route
📍Visit the abandoned molybdenum mine site on the lake (during your boat tour)
📍Explore the community (cafe, grocery store, colourful dock)
📍Hike the Dowding’s Pond Boardwalk Trail

Where to eat ⬇️
📍Baby Moo’s cafe (the only cafe in town)
📍DD’s Takeout

➡️ Send this to someone you’d want to explore Rencontre East with, and follow us for more content like this!

‼️ There’s no/limited cell reception in the area, so download your maps before you visit. We almost got lost during the hike 😬 everything looked the same with no paved paths to guide you lol. We somehow made it back to town on pure memory, just in time to catch our ferry 🤭

Everything you need to know before visiting the tip of Newfoundland’s Great Northern Peninsula (aka Vinland)👇

Follow @roving.mapletales if you want to know more unique places to visit in Atlantic Canada 🇨🇦🦞

A lil historical fact about the place ⬇️
If you’re wondering, this is the place where the Norse explorer Leif Erikson and his crew sailed from Greenland and set up a camp 1000 years ago, on land that Indigenous people had been living on for a long time before people from Europe arrived. They were the first Europeans to settle in the Americas and they did this almost 500 years before Columbus came to the Americas.

Places to visit during your visit ⬇️
📍L’Anse aux Meadows (the actual encampment site)
📍Norstead Viking Village (a recreated village next door with the Snorri ship)
📍St. Anthony and St. Lunaire-Griquet during iceberg
season
📍Quirpon Island
📍Goose Cove

Activities not to miss ⬇️
📍Dark Tickle zodiac boat tour to see icebergs, Quirpon island, whales, and seabirds
📍Guided tour operated by Parks Canada at the L’Anse aux Meadows Historic Site

Where to eat ⬇️
📍Norseman restaurant (they have the BEST seafood in our opinion)
📍Skipper Hot’s Pub
📍Café Nymphe
