What a lovely and inspiring evening! 🔭 A huge thank you to the wonderful ladies at WIA-Europe Hungary Regional Network for the kind invitation and for organising such an fascinating conversation with Professor Catherine Heymans! A professor of astrophysics at The University of Edinburgh, a pioneering researcher exploring the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy, an author, a mother, and the first woman to hold the title of Astronomer Royal for Scotland in its nearly 200-year history. What an extraordinary journey! And what a ray of sunshine Catherine is, with her infectious energy and enthusiasm! I loved hearing Catherine share insights from her new book 𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒕𝒐 𝑫𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒏 𝒂 𝑼𝒏𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒆, as well as her personal journey, including her experiences with chronic illness, navigating life as a woman in STEM, the importance of supporting fellow women in science, and her passion for inspiring the next generation. All of which are very close to my heart! And to the WIA-Europe Hungary team - it's wonderful to see the enthusiasm and initiative you're bringing to building this community here in Hungary. Keep up the fantastic work, and I'm really looking forward to the next event! 🤍

Last week I was down in Edinburgh sharing the Unmapped Places project with funders the Williamson Trust and @royalsoced, and all the other fundees from the Healthy Planet, Healthy People programme.  As last year, it was a wonderfully uplifting, inspiring, convivial, informal and relaxed event, with the purpose of larger collaboration for community-led systems change. YES. This is how funders should fund. This is what's needed at this point in time. Funders take note! The initial funding application is not onerous. It's simple yet thoughtful.  They embrace flexibility, things changing and evolving, things going 'wrong' (which is not for hiding, which we are all used to doing). In other words, there is plenty of space for emergent learning and feedback - we are not tied to arbitrary outputs and outcomes that we'd listed on an application before any work commenced (a totally backwards way of doing anything by the way). All the money is given upfront. They trust us. They bring us together at the RSE (who administrate the fund) as 'our' space, recognising that the space historically and currently may feel overwhelming and exclusionary for some. We are encouraged to make it our own, be however we need to be there... transforming spaces.  All the fundees briefly present their projects (in whatever way they wish - last year we had a song!) instead of writing a final report. They include the project reviewers in the room; the process is transparent and we get to meet and discuss with people who looked over our applications. They actively encourage crossover and collaboration amongst the fundees, for bigger-picture change. We are not in competition.  Should we choose to scale our project, scale is understood in a thousand ways, 'growth' is not the only way. For the follow-on funding application, they provide a small amount of money to cover time/costs developing the application. That could include paying folk for meetings or workshops, and for writing the actual application.  (Continued in comments)

We’re thrilled and honored to welcome Edinburgh photographer @susielowestudio as a guest at How to Write and Publish a Cookbook, our three-day workshop at the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Susie Lowe has spent more than 20 years photographing food for chefs, authors, brands and publishers. Her cookbooks include projects with The Hebridean Baker Coinneach MacLeod, Scotland’s National Chef Gary Maclean, and Great British Bake Off winner Peter Sawkins. Her clients include Waitrose, Gleneagles, and Diageo. We had a wonderful time at our AGM, which we held at @samsmarinescience! This event was the first opportunity for our new cohort of members to come together in person. It was a joy to finally meet them all, especially after reading their inspiring and impressive membership applications. As part of our 2-day meeting, SAMS told us about the vital work they’re doing to generate and promote knowledge about Scotland’s marine environment and communities. Thank you so much to the many SAMS researchers who gave their time to talk to us. Importantly, the AGM was an opportunity to hear updates from the YAS members leading our ongoing projects, and pitches for new project ideas. In wenigen Tagen jährt sich die deutsche Wiedervereinigung zum 36. Mal. Ein Anlass, der zeigt, dass Veränderungen möglich sind, auch wenn es vorher für sehr viele unvorstellbar war. Dafür brauchte es den demokratischen und friedlichen Einsatz sehr vieler Menschen! Eine Erkenntnis, die weit über Deutschland hinaus von Bedeutung ist. Gemeinsam mit dem Deutschen Generalkonsulat haben wir in Edinburgh den Tag der Deutschen Einheit gefeiert. Im Mittelpunkt stand die enge Freundschaft zwischen Deutschland und Schottland sowie die starke Partnerschaft zwischen Niedersachsen und Schottland. Beide Regionen verbindet das Vertrauen in Wissenschaft, Innovation und den internationalen Austausch von Ideen. Denn Fortschritt entsteht dort, wo Menschen, Institutionen und Perspektiven über Grenzen hinweg zusammenkommen. Genau das erreicht unsere Partnerschaft und das Programm für gemeinsame Wissenschaft mit Schottland. Wir in Niedersachsen sehen ein enormes Potenzial in dieser Partnerschaft und sind entschlossen, sie durch mehr Austausch, mehr gemeinsame Projekte und stärkere Verbindungen zwischen Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft in Zukunft noch weiter auszubauen. The #Curious festival at @royalsoced Society of Edinburgh has been a wonderfully nurturing experience, and I was fortunate to attend a workshop on Arts in Scottish prisons last week, hosted by Dr Kristin Anderson, Lecturer in Criminology at @edinburghnapier, which gave an insight into the experiences of incarceration expressed by prisoners through art and poetry that have been published in the STIR magazine. We learned about the overcrowding and underfunding that is keeping people trapped in the system with inadequate resources to address the trauma and societal support structures that could break reoffending cycles. We also had a chance to create our own response to the prisoners work by creating our own work to form a ‘zine, and as I tore words from a bridal magazine (so therapeutic!) I thought about the privilege of every one of us sitting in that room, having choice around how we manage our lives, and the trauma that losing liberty brings. And the poems and artwork showed the power of creativity to connect with our emotions and process life’s experiences- and made me more determined to continue my own creative practice and advocacy work as @resiliencerebel helping others to be more creative to support their wellbeing too. One phrase stayed with me: “Where there are humans there will be Art” And it was an important reminder that regardless of the reasons why they were in the prison system- every one of the contributors to these magazines was human, with a right to expect dignity, respect and a chance to express their inner world through the arts.

STIR is an arts magazine made by prisoners, for prisoners, bringing together artwork and writing from across Scotland’s prisons. At the Royal Society of Edinburgh @royalsoced Dr Kirstin Anderson introduced us to STIR and the stories, experiences and creative work held within its pages. We were then invited to respond to what we’d seen, using found imagery and text. Our responses will become part of a collective zine that will be shared with STIR’s editorial team.
