Twenty-five young STEM leaders. Fifteen schools. One incredible day.

On Tuesday 18 August, the Royal Society of Victoria threw open its historic doors to twenty-five Year 10 students from 15 secondary schools across 5 Victorian Tech Schools, for the inaugural Leaders in STEM Forum, held as part of National Science Week.

The day was jam-packed. Students explored the RSV's iconic building, heard from Jake Fehily of the Victorian Student Representative Council, sat down face-to-face with RSV Fellows including Victoria's own Lead Scientist Amanda Caples, and got hands-on coding with the wonderful Robogals team. Rob Gell AM, President of the Royal Society of Victoria, was there in person to welcome this new generation of STEM leaders to the 170-year-old home of science and technology in Victoria - the first time in the RSV's history that secondary students have been welcomed into the fold.

This was so much more than a day out. It was Tech School staff and students from across the state, standing shoulder to shoulder, connecting regional and metropolitan communities with the people currently shaping the future of STEM in Victoria.
And we are just getting started. The vision: an annual statewide Leaders in STEM program, built on a powerful partnership between Victoria's Tech Schools and the Royal Society of Victoria.

FRESH PAPERRRRR 🚨🔥✌️ Victorian lowland temperate native grasslands are among the most endangered ecosystems on Earth. Cleared for farming and further degraded by urban development, invasive species and poor management, these grasslands now survive only as small, isolated fragments, pushing many native mammals to extinction. The fat-tailed dunnart is the last remaining small marsupial of these grasslands, and without urgent, large-scale conservation and restoration led by federal and state governments, we risk losing this irreplaceable species too.

As always, I have published this work open-access so all can read it - https://doi.org/10.1071/RS26004%20

Huge thanks to my collaborators and co-authors Adrian Marshall, John Morgan and Andrew Pask.

Long form? I can do.
TLDR version? Plastic isn’t actually the problem. I think it’s the entire concept of disposability on a finite planet that we need to address.

🌟 Science grows stronger when great minds and communities come together.

We’re proud to have The Royal Society of Victoria joining the Young Scientist Competition of Victoria 2026 as a valued supporter! 🔬🚀

For generations, the Royal Society of Victoria has championed scientific thinking, discovery and engagement. Having their support behind YSCV 2026 makes our journey of encouraging Victoria’s young scientists even more special. 🧪💡

Through this support, we hope to give students the confidence to ask bold questions, experiment with new ideas and discover just how far their curiosity can take them

A heartfelt thank you to The Royal Society of Victoria for believing in the potential of young minds and being part of this exciting journey. 💙

Here’s to curiosity, discovery and the scientists of tomorrow! 🌏🔭✨

Melbourne's Science Week opening event

I’m obsessed with maps and having spent my whole (50+ years) working life preparing cartographic artwork you’d think I’d have had enough, but no!, my interest was piqued by an opening session of Science Week titled “Maps!” presented by a “Cartographic Comedian”.

Promoted by Geography Victoria and held in the often-passed-but-never-entered historic building of the Royal Society of Victoria I had no idea what to expect.

Julian O’Shea, a self-confessed nerd, lover of maps that contain quirky things and comedian of some renown shared a delightfully funny collection of stories in which maps are the centrepiece.

Who’d have thought that a motel in remote Eucla, WA, may’ve had its main building designed in a cubic shape because the architect was influenced by a map that had a picture of a wombat in the area, “and we all know that wombat’s poos are cube shaped!”

I’ve drawn countless maps of Melbourne and never, until I heard Julian, once thought about why the streets are orientated at such an unusual East-West angle. It turns out to be amusingly specific that the dates when the sun aligns exactly with Bourke Street are significant moments in the folklore of Victoria’s great capital.

Julian obviously loves our city and, like many of the Seniors in Melbourne community, enjoys finding hidden places with behind-the-scenes stories. His recently published Unknown Melbourne Map highlights many of these and is a fresh source of unconventional, somewhat eccentric, ideas for Melbourne jaunts.

I so enjoyed this, thank you Julian and Geography Victoria for taking me on a memorable tour of maps with mirth.
