🎬📚 Lights. Camera. Literacy!

An incredible launch of Module 101: Introduction to the Science of Reading at Motion Picture Technical High School!

Our MTSS team did a marvelous job leading our faculty through the importance of literacy and Scarborough’s Reading Rope, exploring how word recognition and language comprehension work together to develop skilled readers. As a NYC Reads Phase One high school, we’re strengthening Tier 1 instruction across disciplines so every student can access challenging texts, build knowledge, and find their voice.

NYC Reads represents an investment in research-based instruction and deep professional learning. At MPT, that means empowering the next generation of diverse storytellers and filmmakers through the power of literacy.

Special thanks to Principal Blanca Cruz and Trisha Lutero Ferris from the Roybal Film and Television Production Magnet for joining us! From New York to Los Angeles, we share a commitment to elevating literacy and expanding opportunities for young creators.

Two coasts. One shared commitment. We can do this together! ✨ @roybalfilmandtv

Regram • @roybalfilmandtv In summer 2026, recent Roybal graduates completed their 5-week EIF Careers Summer Program Fellowship on the Fox Studio lot.

The five Roybal students were placed at Fox across a variety of offices (On-Air Promos, Fox Entertainment Studios, and Fox Studio Costumes). Over the course of five weeks, students took part in a paid work-based learning experience that included hands-on industry training, exposure to production and post-production departments, and professional development workshops.

We are appreciative of our studio partners and their commitment to supporting our future filmmakers.

This summer, members of the MPT Film Department traveled to Los Angeles for the INDSTRY Network Summit! 🎬

From touring the historic Culver Studios to participating in workshops, panels, and hands-on activities, our team had the opportunity to learn directly from industry professionals. We also got to reconnect, collaborate, and exchange ideas with our friends and fellow educators across the INDSTRY Network.

Now, we’re bringing those relationships, ideas, and opportunities right back home to our students in Queens.

Hollywoodside went Hollywood. 🎬✈️

This summer, the MPT Film/CTE team headed to Los Angeles for the INDSTRY Network Summit, spending the week learning, connecting, and getting an inside look at the industry our students are preparing to enter.

From conversations with working professionals to seeing how film education connects to real sets, studios, and career pathways, the biggest takeaway was simple: our students belong in these spaces.

A huge thank you to Karen, Keysha, Hector, and the entire INDSTRY Network team for welcoming us, investing in our educators, and continuing to open doors for the next generation of filmmakers.

And thank you to all of the educators and students in the room who shared their experiences, perspectives, and ideas with us.

We came back to Queens with new ideas, new relationships, and an even bigger vision for what film education at MPT can look like.

Queens to Hollywood and back. Now we bring it to the classroom. 🎥✨

A huge shout-out to our incredible Main Office team and School Aides for everything you did this year and for putting together such a beautiful end-of-year wrap party. Thank you to our students who presented certificates and heartfelt words of appreciation to our staff, you reminded us exactly why we do this work.

We are also deeply grateful to the incomparable Billy Porter for taking the time to share words of encouragement and love with our team. 🎬 HISTORY CHANNEL PARTNERSHIP: TELLING THE STORY OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG 🎺 @history @aetv @roybalfilmandtv @louisarmstronghouse

At Motion Picture Technical High School, we believe the best way to learn filmmaking is by making films that matter. This year, our student filmmakers had the extraordinary opportunity to collaborate with The History Channel, A&E, Roybal Schools, and industry professionals through a documentary filmmaking challenge focused on non-fiction storytelling.

The result is The House on 107th Street: Louis Armstrong Museum — a student-produced documentary exploring the life, legacy, and cultural impact of Louis Armstrong through archival research, interviews, original cinematography, and documentary storytelling.

What makes this project especially meaningful is the journey our students took to find their story. After exploring several historical figures and facing challenges securing interviews, they turned their attention back to their own community and discovered that one of the most influential musicians in American history had lived just minutes from our school in Corona, Queens.

This project represents exactly the kind of authentic, industry-connected learning experience we envisioned when creating MPT.

A heartfelt thank you to our partners at The History Channel, A&E, Roybal Schools, and the Louis Armstrong House Museum for believing in our students and providing them with an opportunity they will never forget.

Special thanks as well to Mr. Fitzpatrick and Mr. Ducoff for mentoring and supporting our student filmmakers throughout this ambitious and inspiring production.
Congratulations to our student filmmakers for proving once again that powerful stories can be found right in our own backyard.

🎬✨ THAT’S A WRAP ON THE 2ND ANNUAL MPT FILM FESTIVAL! ✨🎬

What an unforgettable day celebrating the creativity, courage, and artistic vision of our 9th and 10th grade MPT filmmakers. @cunyua @nycschools @nycps.arts @roybalfilmandtv @madein_ny

Over the course of this school year, our students transformed ideas into stories, writing scripts, directing scenes, operating cameras, recording sound, and editing original films that reflected their voices, experiences, and imaginations. Seeing our entire MPT community come together to laugh, think, cheer, and celebrate one another’s work reminded us exactly why we built this school.

To our student filmmakers: your stories matter. Your voices matter. And this is only the beginning. 🎞️
A special thank you to our incredible Film & CTE Department, our supportive families, our community partners, and our special guest Emelyn Stuart, founder of Stuart Cinema, for believing in the next generation of storytellers and providing every MPT student with a special opportunity to continue experiencing the magic of cinema this summer. 🍿🎬 @stuartcinema @emelynstuart

As we close out our second year at Motion Picture Technical High School, we are filled with pride and excitement for what lies ahead. The future of film is bright, and it is being created right here in Hollywoodside.

🎥 Roll the teaser. Relive the magic. And get ready for what’s next.
