Great night seeing friends in LA chatting about the latest and greatest analog consoles from SSL and Harrison. Had some lovely PMC 8.2s and Neumann 310H to mix my multitracks on. Thanks to everyone that made it out and to RSPE for hosting!

BrightFrame, a cutting-edge immersive audio company, has expanded to Los Angeles with a new 9.1.4 Dolby Atmos mixing facility centered around PMC monitors—mirroring its flagship New Orleans studio. The move highlights BrightFrame’s commitment to world-class sound for film, TV, music, and podcasts.

Located in Burbank’s media corridor, the studio is owned by Dr. Jenny Mains, who launched the New Orleans facility in 2024 with partner and lead engineer Erick Bardales. Designed and integrated by Bardales in collaboration with RSPE Audio Solutions, the LA space is purpose-built for mixing, post-production, ADR, dialogue editing, and vocal work, while also supporting writing, production, and tracking sessions.

I’ve been working with the folks at @perfectsurround for the past few years to help develop some new features in Penteo Pro+ that I use often in @dolbylabs Atmos mixing. The folks at @productionexpert just did an excellent article on this update!

Penteo Pro+ was originally designed as a format conversion tool, more commonly known as an “up-mixer.” In my immersive mixing, I’m not interested in simply up-mixing tracks. What I did find, though, was that Penteo is a powerful way to generate de-correlated audio that can “spread” individual tracks or stems throughout the three-dimensional space.

Those who know me know how passionate I am about immersive recording. Nothing replaces capturing the natural reflections and ambience of a source in a great room with immersive intent. But when remixing music for immersive formats, we can’t go back in time and re-record. This is where I began using Penteo to mimic early reflections around the space.

Penteo has now integrated this concept into their algorithm. The plugin can recognize the spatial location of the original track (front, side, or rear), then create de-correlated content that mimics early reflections across the remaining speakers in the layout you choose.

For example: if I send a stereo synth to the rear surrounds, Penteo mutes those channels and generates de-correlated material in the others. In a 9.0.6 layout, that creates the sense of the synth emanating forward into the room from behind the listener.

What I love most about Penteo is its sound. Many de-correlation tools suffer from phase issues or lack a musical tonality. For me, Penteo Pro+ shines by preserving tonal integrity, while creating musical de-correlated materials.

I do encourage restraint with this tool. I never run Penteo at unity gain—I treat it like ambient mics in a mix. Adjust the balance, check in headphones, and find the sweet spot where it adds just enough spatial glue to build a more enveloping image.

Happy mixing :)
