A glimpse into Soil Skin Memory An exhibition exploring the relationship between fashion, ecology, heritage, and responsibility. Working with reclaimed botanical waste, natural dyes, Dhakai Muslin, organic indigo, clay, and jute, the project reimagines clothing as a medium for reflection, research, dialogue. Structured through three interconnected chapters: Waste and Flora, Heritage and Trade, and Arsenic and Earth. The exhibition invites us to consider where materials come from, what they carry, and what responsibilities they accompany design. At RT’s last show, model Cieran Sheard @cieransheard walked the runway 35 weeks pregnant in a Batashi Kaftan, carrying a soft ultra-fine organic RT handwoven muslin scarf that slipped from her hand- a spontaneous moment became a statement to love and protect our planet, the mother to over 8 billion children. Now she returns to the stage holding her baby girl, wearing ultra-fine organic RT handwoven muslin gown, this is a statement wear. This historic fabric was once worn by Mughal Emperors, Queen Marie Antoinette, Joséphine Bonaparte, Jane Austen, and the Nawabs of Bengal, is as light and soft as the wind. Purely hand-spun and plant based, its is 100% eco-friendly, cruelty-free, sustainable, and often dyed with organic waste. Fashion model Chloe O’Connor is wearing Batashi Kaftan, accessorised with organic handwoven muslin scarf. Kaftan, Caftan, Kurta, Boubou, Kimono, virtually every culture throughout history has their version of an easy flowing garment for everyone, everyday. We love all love a timeless elegance of this eternal garment. The “K” version can be traced back to thousands of years in Turkish Mesopotamia (present-day Turkey, Syria, and Iraq) and the word “kapton” which translates to “covering garment”. Back in the day, most garments were handwoven or produced in an artisan. These hard-working creatives at the artisan would be required to wear free flowing clothes to get through their functional activities during the day, and are accessible to move around. This garment would provide them the leeway to work comfortably. From 12th till early 20th century, mostly during the Ottoman Empire, the sultans wore sumptuous kaftans made with expensive fabrics as a way to display their power and rank. In a gesture of political prowess, sultans also gifted fine kaftans to important generals and guests at the Topkapi Palace. Kaftans eventually made their way to Morocco and North Africa, where they became a staple garment in traditional dress. It is also timeless wear in Bangladesh along with the traditional saree when the Mughals settled in the Bengal from the Persian Gulf in 1526 bringing along their spices and other cotton garment trades. Fashion model Jake Matton @iisjake is wearing RT Signature Boyfriend’s Turtleneck by RT in pure and organically source pure Indigo, accessorised in organic cotton scarf dyed with organic waste. The indigo that was used to eco dye the fabric was sourced organically and collected from Rangpur, Bangladesh. The word ‘Rong’ translates to ‘Colour’ in Bengali and pronounced as Rong. ‘Pur’ translates to ‘Place’ in Bengali, which makes the name ‘Colour Place’ well-known for cultivating indigo (Neel- blue). The lolcals called this colour Rong, from the term Rong is where the name Rongpur (today Rangpur) originated. The pain and horror of this part of history still remains with few Neel Kuthis (building meant for indigo processing, trade, and management). Only recently, indigo is being produced commercially in this region again. In RT models are art. The footprint already existed when the garment was made by me; now it becomes theirs. Walking barefoot on the runway allow their soles to carry the work forward, grounding the piece in presence, care, and bravery. It is a reminder of the patience it takes to love and for the planet, especially when creating organic fabric. This is a statement brand.
