Pulling out of the old scarred skin… old rough thing I don’t need now, I strip off slip out of leave behind. I slough off deadscales flick skinflakes to the ground. Shedding toughness peeling layers down to vulnerable stuff. And I’m blinking off old eyelids for a new way of seeing… By the rock I rub against I’m going to be tender again. - Harryette Mullen

It’s been a whirlwind week getting ready for and running my sale at the BIG Blandinsville town-wide yard sale last Saturday. I got to see SO many friendly faces, both new to me and old friends/family. I got to meet the new owners of the house where my sister @runbaker and I grew up. They are wonderful, salt of the earth folks, and I cannot say how happy this whole process has made me. I am completely shocked by that, as my nerves and anxiety have been shot/through the roof lately. Saturday was a much needed release for me even though it was a crazy busy day. It all just reminds me of how lucky I am to have grown up in that small town. I am who I am because of those people, for better or worse, and I am so grateful for that. I found the best friends of my life in that town and in that area, and to this day stay very close and connected with them in a way I am not sure is common any more. Our connections and relationships make us who we are, but you can always choose to change, move, remake yourself, etc. But I’ll be damned if that McDonough County air doesn’t still fill my lungs, the energy still course through me, and the memories and emotions of a small town kid not fill me up with love and pride each and every day. I’m not a religious person, but I believe in the following words from Psalms… - For he knows we are but dust and that our days are few and brief, like grass, like flowers, blown by the wind and gone forever. Get busy living.

Last week I started really saying goodbye to our house. I have this beautiful memory of Christmas one year where we had a GIANT tree that blocked the entrance to my mom’s beauty shop. We cut it down at a tree farm outside Lomax, threw it on the LaSabre and could barely see out the front window on our way home. Our hopes were high… it was a beautiful tree. — After that thought flashed, I turned around and picked up this book… for some reason… flipped the pages and found this picture. We were so, so lucky. And we still are.
