No one talks about how hard it is going from this…
A job you love → a part-time grind.
Being the life of the party → becoming a father.
Late nights out → real responsibilities.
Feeling fine → feeling depressed, stressed, or anxious.

But we need to talk about it.

As men, as fathers, as athletes, as leaders… we’ve been taught to swallow our emotions, to push through silently, to never show the cracks. We’ve been raised by generations of “be tough,” “deal with it,” and “don’t talk about feelings.” But those old rules are outdated, and honestly, they’re destroying us.

The truth is: everyone struggles.
And the ones who stay silent, who never open up, who never seek help or even a place to vent—those are the ones who end up doing the unthinkable.

It doesn’t make you weak to speak. It doesn’t make you feminine to feel. It makes you human.

We need spaces where dads, runners, lifters, single parents, and anyone carrying weight on their shoulders can sit down, breathe, and say “I’m not okay right now.” We need community. We need honesty. We need to rewrite the narrative for the next generation.

If you find a safe space—friend, partner, coach, group—use it. Open up. Lean in.
Because every time you choose to speak instead of stay silent, you take one powerful step toward a stronger, healthier version of yourself.

You’re not alone. And you never have to be.

The inaugural @petersburgbookfest did NOT disappoint! I had a fantastic time speaking about my book, AFTERLIVES OF THE PLANTATION, on the “Beyond Slavery” panel, ably moderated by @rtwilliams16! I met a host of talented fellow Black writers pushing at the margins of Black storytelling, and my favorite part was getting to engage an enthusiastic community of readers hungry for diverse books about Black life and culture! Sincerest gratitude to @demetriuswfrazier and his incredible team @resist_bks for executing the festival so well that I could hardly believe it was their first go at it. Big ups to my homies @kingsamario @macofaniel who traveled from #durhamnc & #richmondva to support. I left feeling grateful, inspired, and excited to return to next year’s festival! If you’re ever in #petersburgva be sure to check out Resist Books. It’s a beautiful store doing invaluable work to promote Black readers and writers. Thank you for inviting me to be a part of such a momentous occasion! 📚🎉🙌🏾🙏🏾#supportindependentbookstores #blackbookstagram #blackauthorsmatter #blackreaders #blackbooksmatter #blackwriters
