Runners are weird people. We willingly wake up early wrapped in plastic bags before the sun is up to run miles and miles of streets in a town we’ve never been to, just for the fun of it all. We eat candy that’s melted in our sweaty pockets, down mustard packets mid route, and carefully schedule hair washing days. We eat with reckless abandon and carb up with friends with alcohol free beer, in bed by 8. Just for the fun of it all.

Runners are dedicated people, but sometimes, the fun of it all can get lost. The Strava game becomes consuming, we run fast on our easy days to hit numbers that ultimately do not define us, and pinch at all the wonderful, soft skin cushioning our thighs and bellies. We sometimes push to get runs in when everything in us is screaming burn out.

My running relationship has changed profoundly since my days battling a vicious eating disorder that truly was one of the worst experiences of my entire life. My coach has gently gotten me to this place, here today, where I willingly decided to defer my marathon scheduled for this fall in favor of a half, because my heart is just not in a marathon this year. A marathon is a huge undertaking. It requires time, tenacity, eating a LOT, early mornings and sacrifice. There is just no sense in doing one when it requires that much time, and you’re just not into it right now. And not being into it right now, or ever again, is okay. I’ll run a beautiful fun local half and have all my time back, because running a marathon when your mental space says “I’m done” does not sound like a good marathon at all. Take care of yourself, friends, especially my runner friends!
