And then, we listen to “Why has India’s north-east insurgency lasted so long, and is there any hope of a peaceful resolution?”

Rupa Jha investigates the history of the conflict and asks a difficult question: are the special powers granted to the military prolonging the problems?

Come watch. Come listen. Come question. Come discuss.

Because cinema can do more than tell a story.
It can make us look at the stories we have been taught not to see.

At a time when our media and democracy are passing through countless challenges, ‘The Last Man’ gave me immense hope for my work and for democracy. I don’t know how many people this work reached, but whoever it did reach, I feel deeply satisfied. Even if 1,000 people in life understand your words, or gain something from them, for a journalist that is no small thing.

This work received the Ramnath Goenka Award. Vice-President of India handed over that award. In fact, within a year, three different juries gave this socio-political series three awards, and for me, that is validation akin to a peer review. My conviction has only grown stronger that the path of journalism chosen by me and many fellow journalists, though difficult and slow, does contribute something to democracy.

I never tried to make someone else’s work look smaller. Never ran a race with anyone. Never compromised the dignity of journalism for followers. Never responded to false accusations. Never built a false image. If someone’s words hurt, I either conveyed it privately or quietly kept my distance. To carve my own path, I left behind big spaces and even started from zero. To preserve honesty of vision and the strength of words, one must also let go of envy, greed, and arrogance.

And everything I have learned is by observing those around me. You all have always given me so much love and trust that this journey felt smooth despite all challenges. Many people expressed as if my achievement was their own achievement. This is something that cannot be bought. The responsibility of trust is not given to everyone. Thank you 🙏🏼

नीरज घेवान @neeraj.ghaywan का यह इंटरव्यू बीबीसी की रूपा झा @rupajha ने किया है.
