💷 🏧 💳 Bank House - former Bank of England regional headquarters
📍 Leeds, England, UK
👷‍♀️ Building Design Partnership (BDP) 🏗️
📆 1969-71
⭐️ Grade II listed

A formidable late-modernist landmark, Bank House is one of the most dramatic banking buildings of post-war Britain.

Designed as an inverted ziggurat, its upper floors progressively project outwards, giving the building its extraordinary fortress-like presence while allowing similar levels of natural light to each floor.

Constructed in reinforced concrete and clad in polished Cornish granite with bronze detailing, it was purpose-built as the Leeds regional headquarters and bullion centre of the Bank of England.

There’s also an interesting chunk of abandoned urban planning here.

The first-floor deck was constructed to connect with Leeds’ proposed elevated pedestrian walkway network - separating pedestrians from traffic in a manner being explored in cities across Britain. The wider system was never completed.

Historic England describes Bank House as the most architecturally ambitious and accomplished example of the Bank of England’s 1960s programme of rebuilding its regional branches and bullion centres.

And now the building is undergoing another major transformation.

Developer @rushbondplc, working with @fusestudiosltd , is refurbishing around 90,000 sq ft as high-grade offices while retaining and restoring the listed structure.

A new multi-level atrium is being created, the Cornish granite exterior restored and a roof-level business lounge and terrace added.

Best of all, the old bank vaults survive.

The lower-ground vaults are being transformed into an auditorium, with those above becoming meeting rooms.

Rather than demolishing an ageing office building, Bank House is being adapted again. Its owners estimate that retaining the existing structure saves more than 3,700 tonnes of CO₂ compared with an equivalent new build.

Completion is expected in 2027.
