Rush has always had a special place in Jackie Bollinger’s heart. The Oak Park local was a patient here and was inspired by the care and treatment she received.

Bollinger is studying biopsychology, cognition and neuroscience at the @uofmichigan. This summer, she worked with Rush’s Arka Mallela, MD, MS, assistant professor, Department of Neurological Surgery, through the Summer Scholars Program in the Division of Translational Science at @rushumedicalcollege.

“Getting to come back and join these teams that I’m hoping to someday be a part of — it’s important to me,” Bollinger says.

Future physicians are helping shape the future of medical education.

Members of NBME's Medical Student Leader Roundtable represent medical students and residents from organizations across the medical education community. Through ongoing conversations with NBME, they share perspectives from their peers, raise issues affecting learners and help ensure student voices are reflected in our work.

Meet the 2026 cohort and hear what motivates them to lead on our website! Link in bio.

🛡️ Post-Exposure Prevention & Safety Culture | Part 7

An occupational exposure requires prompt action—not panic.

ACT → CLEAN/FLUSH → REPORT → SEEK MEDICAL EVALUATION → FOLLOW UP

Regular vaccination, standard precautions, proper PPE, training, and timely reporting help protect healthcare workers and strengthen ICU safety culture.

For potential HIV exposure, urgent medical assessment is important because PEP is time-sensitive and may be indicated.

RECOGNIZE → REPORT → RESPOND → LEARN → PREVENT

🛡️ A SAFE ICU IS BUILT BY EVERY HEALTHCARE WORKER, EVERY SHIFT.

Follow RS Medical Hub for practical, evidence-based medical education.

💉 Needle-Stick & Sharps Safety | Part 4

One moment of unsafe sharps handling can lead to occupational exposure.

Never recap used needles by hand. Dispose of sharps immediately after use in an appropriate puncture-resistant sharps container. Use safety-engineered devices when available and follow your facility’s sharps-safety protocol.

If a needle-stick or sharps injury occurs:
STOP → WASH → REPORT → SEEK PROMPT MEDICAL EVALUATION

🛡️ Safe Sharps → Safe Handling → Safer Healthcare Worker

Follow RS Medical Hub for practical, evidence-based medical education.

🩸 Blood & Body Fluid Exposure | Part 5

Blood and body fluids can pose an occupational exposure risk—especially through broken skin, mucous membranes, splashes, sharps injuries, or contaminated materials.

🛡️ Assess the Risk → Use Appropriate PPE → Protect Skin & Mucous Membranes → Perform Hand Hygiene

If exposure occurs:
STOP → CLEAN/FLUSH → REPORT → SEEK MEDICAL EVALUATION

Early reporting and prompt assessment can help ensure appropriate management and follow-up.

Protect Yourself → Prevent Exposure → Report Promptly

🧤 PPE — Protect Yourself First | Part 3

PPE is not just about wearing protection—it’s about choosing and using the right protection for the right exposure risk.

🧤 Gloves → When contact with blood, body fluids or contaminated materials is anticipated.
🥼 Gown/Apron → When clothing or skin may be exposed.
😷 Mask/Respirator → According to the anticipated respiratory risk.
🥽 Eye/Face Protection → When splashes or sprays are possible.

Assess the Risk → Choose the Right PPE → Use It Correctly → Remove Safely → Perform Hand Hygiene

🛡️ Right PPE • Right Use • Better Protection

The practice of medicine and music begins in the long, disciplined hours no one sees. 🎻

This September, I’m coming home to Chicago to perform with the World Doctors Orchestra for two concerts with a purpose:

September 11 at 7 PM — Wentz Concert Hall, Naperville
September 12 at 7 PM — Harris Theater, Chicago

Concert proceeds will benefit Chi-Care and UIC’s Community Outreach Intervention Projects, supporting unhoused and underserved Chicago communities through food, healthcare, street outreach, and harm-reduction services.

DID YOU BUY YOUR TICKET YET?!

@rushumedicalcollege M1s received their white coats and recited the Hippocratic Oath at Saturday’s #WhiteCoatCeremony. Surrounded by family and friends, they celebrated one of the first milestones in their medical careers.

“This white coat is the next step in accomplishing my dreams, which is to leave the world a better place than when I came into it,” Kylie Finkelstein says. “I will be a very happy person if I can even help just one person.”
