POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

foto diary pt 1:

this November our team at @neworleans.airlift put on a series of concerts in the @musicbox.village. we called the series SONIC REMEDIES because we believe that music, that sound can soothe and assuage fears, offering us respite and peace. we also believe that art and community will help us to make sense of these times—stitching us back together, making us stronger.

honestly, it’s been hard for me to put words to the experience. producing in a pandemic is no small feat, and I think I can speak for my team when I say that we felt rolling waves of fear and frustration, gratitude and thanks, joy and anxiety, often washing over us simultaneously. in the end we made something for our friends and neighbors, for ourselves. we persevered and it was beautiful.

what follows is a series of photos and videos documenting the work (all my own footage—so pardon the shoddy camera work in places). endless thanks to the artists that trusted us, and graced our space. endless thanks to my colleagues for their resilience and dedication. you are magic ✨
onward.

1) “a measured approach”
2) weekly testing was a mutual agreement amongst us. ty to @crescentcarenola for helping us to keep each other safe
3) en masque @michotsmelodymakers et @leylacello
4) a woozy, wild, and howling version of our national anthem conjured up our trepidation and weariness, but as the strains of melody rang out in the night, I looked around and saw this audience all in masks, all showing up for one another. the static lifted.
5) ambiguity supplanted by pure joy
6) @blackmagicmusicgroup at sunset, hearts beating
7) “house music”
8) exactly the way you feel hearing that the AP has called it for Biden/Harris
9) @helengillet returns with my favorite rattle from our @anmlcollective days
10) proof that 90% of the time, the extra staging is 100% worth it. @helengillet + @mikedillonband are an incredible duo, more of this in 2021 pls.

Over 7 months without live music. By far the longest break of my life. So glad to have tonight kill that cycle with this friends-like-family crew and with the amazing @michotsmelodymakers & @leylacello .... ugly cried under my mask more than I care to admit. Thank you for letting me feel all the feelings tonight. It was so good to wave at old friends and be in this beautiful space. I love you New Orleans especially you, @musicbox.village. PS happy happy bday to the lovely @icanhavedat and her krewe. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

✨✨✨✨
Fires bridge the gap through the veil
and into water.
Spirits come close and gather
near to loved ones raising alters
and tending to them faithfully.
Tears and joy and memory flood the streets
We gather in secret and en mass
until every flame
has burnt itself out.
And every year we have a few more ghosts to light candles for.
✨✨✨✨
All these years and all these luvs I am thinking of you now
✨✨✨✨

Day of the Dead

I woke up missing the swamp something fierce. For years it used to be my tradition to be in New Orleans for this time of year through Halloween and day of the dead. Every year I would drag all my willing friends out to get in canoes with me for my birthday (which is tomorrow). @icanhavedat @genie_club and I would split a party bus and have a lingerie themed debauturous moving dance party. I deeply miss the spirit of Nola and the people there, these precious wild ass friends.. so many of which I consider my chosen family. I miss the chaotic tangle of limbs, of sweating off paint and dancing bodies smashing into one another night after night. Beautiful roving gangs of cackling witches through the hot untethered streets greeting one another. Thank you New Orleans you forever have a home in my heart.. nothing comes close to the times I’ve had with you. Hoping the state of the world births some kind of deep transformation after so much darkness. I hope you all are staying safe and sane in these strange times.

Also Sending my luv out to all the friends in Nola and in the bay missing Katie Ray. 🌹🌹🌹
