In Black spaces community and loving comes in many forms. One of my favorite moments growing up was the ritualistic practice of getting my hair tended to. Hair functions as a vital part of Black expression. It holds cultural, historical, and spiritual meaning across the black atlantic and the diaspora. My inquiry into the role that hair plays deepened after I shaved my head out of necessity. This experience disrupted my sense of self. What I once thought was essential to my self-image became separate and began to take on a new form. In response to this new form, I contemplate transformation, loss, and continuity by using sculpture to see the body as an evolving archive.
My recent body of work, Blue Magic, focuses on hair as both material and metaphor. The sculptural forms in this series draw from the aesthetics of West African masquerade traditions, using the form as a way to embody, conceal, and transform identity. These works act as devotional figures that explore the importance of hair within Black culture and the systems that shape its perception.

I blinked and it went! Feeling so many emotions looking through these photos (by the talented @bamblerdander). Pouring so much into my work has unlocked something that I fear can never be contained again. Grateful to be where I am and I can’t wait to see the future, because we’re just at the beginning!!
