Huge thanks to everyone in London, who came along to mark the publishing of the Design After Design essay series at Pelican House 🥳📚💖 We had a full house and a great discussion on stage between Arjun Harrison-Mann, Ruth Beale and Gemma Copeland, whose essay “Common Ground” laid the foundation for the conversation. In the spirit of the heavily footnoted essay, Arjun and Ruth had both brought their own “footnotes” for Gemma’s text to further entangle the subject of the panel discussion: designing tools for social movements. Arjun turned our attention to Johanna Hedva’s “Sick Woman Theory” as well as the “Social Model of Disability”. Ruth highlighted the book “emergent strategy” by adrienne maree brown and the feminist “Iceberg Model” of capitalist patriarchal economics. Afterwards they guided us through a selection of their own work before we all descended on the bar. For the occasion, we had printed (not nearly enough) booklets of the five Design After Design essays, typeset by designer Diandra Galih. Together with our publisher, Further Reading, Diandra has designed a book for the collection of essays, that will premiere at the New York Art Book Fair in a week. Drop by stall S6 if you happen to be in New York!

Yesterday, one of our DDB team members, @bethany.rigby, hosted an event for the “Design After Design Essay Series” at @pelican.house, where she is part of the team. @gemcopeland led a really interesting conversation as the author of one of the selected essays “Common Ground”, and our school’s brilliant academic staff, @ruth.beale and @arjun_harrisonmann, were on the panel-they've also presented at the DDB in past years 🫰🏼💪🏼! It was a great opportunity to hear their ideas. Congratulations to all 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼. DDB 2026-27 resumes at the end of this month, and we are really excited to contribute more staff research developments and learn about their ideas and struggles 😊😜. #designdoesbuffets #goldsmithsdesign #research #conversation

Lately I’ve been teaching myself to do some live visual note-taking, and I honestly have massive respect for people in this role who are so tuned into a conversation, can pick up on intersections and still accurately represent individual voices I’m quite early in the learning process, and will admit I’m holding onto post-editing as a crutch. But tonight was such a joy, attending the Design After Design essay launch by @postdesign_org @further.reading, hearing various practitioners reflect on their grassroots work and the interdependence and reciprocity embedded within it 🌱🌱

On September 10th join us at Pelican House to hear ‘No One Way Works’: a conversation between Gemma Copeland, Arjun Harrison-Mann and Ruth Beale (see their bio's 👇 below) about working within collectives for social movement. Taking Gemma’s essay ‘Common Ground’ as a starting point, we’ll encounter tools, strategies, challenges and influences from our speaker’s experience of working within social movement ecologies. We hope to see you there! The conversation is part of an evening gathering in London to celebrate the release of the Design After Design essay series published by Post Design and Further Reading - join us in Bethnal Green on Thursday, September 10th from 7-9 pm for talks, readings and drinks. Sign-up is open, it's free to attend and the tickets are limited (registration link in bio) 💫 Speaker Bios 💫 Ruth Beale's s socially engaged art practice seeks to trouble societal structures, reframe knowledge hierarchies and advocate for collective approaches. Their work grows from context-specific research and participatory processes, resulting in a wide variety of forms including events, public works, drawing, writing, installations and print. Gemma Copeland is a London-based designer, organiser, and educator. Her practice centres on building infrastructures to cultivate more creative and resilient movements, and exploring how arts and culture can expand our collective political imagination. Gemma also runs @materials.festival, an annual festival of visual culture and politics. Arjun Harrison-Mann is a designer, activist and lecturer whose practice foregrounds the Social Model of Disability as a design provocation and seeks to Rehearse Accessible Futures. Rooted in Disability Justice, his work is informed by his lived experience as a neurodiverse ex-young carer, and oscillates between exploring accessibility in the context of direct action and joyful experiences.
