What an inspiring day at @foylefilm Festival’s @immersivearts_uk Showcase “Creating Immersive Storytellers Who Speak Tech” at @nerve_centre! Huge thanks to @joecarlin87 and the @nerve_centre and @immersivearts_uk teams for bringing it all together. The day kicked off with talks from Matthew Malcolm @artscouncilni and Nicola Roleston, NI’s new @immersivearts_uk producer, followed by a panel discussion chaired by Ruth McCullough (@immersivearts_uk). Panelists @deeharvey, @ruxandra_gp, and @lo_volt David Cosgrove from @retinizeofficial shared insights on careers, industry trends, software tools, audience engagement, AI, and the future of immersive storytelling. Highlights from the day included: Heartbeat – Directed by @deeharvey, a deeply personal VR film giving voice to Johanna’s journey through miscarriage. This moving piece explores pain, confusion, and resilience, breaking the silence around pregnancy loss. Truly wonderful to see space being made for women’s experiences in this still male-dominated sector. PEPITOS: The Beak Saga – Directed by @ruxandra_gp, a gorgeous, life-affirming story that invites audiences into a magical world to experience friendship and teamwork. UNDERSCORE – By Hugh McGrory @hugh.mcgrory and Kinetek @kinetek_ai, featuring Ian McElhinney & Jessica Reynolds (@jjessicareynolds) as grandfather and granddaughter, facing the apocalypse. I absolutely loved this deeply moving and mesmerizing, so contemporary and impactful. The technology served the story rather than foregrounding itself, making it feel like the story was told through the tech, not despite it. Truly a work of its time. A Town Unravelled by Aidan Brady @das_belfast, exploring the 1974 closure of Newry Port through VR. An audiovisual reflection on deindustrialisation and its ongoing impact. Great to catch up with fellow artist @annafoleysim too. What a day of thoughtful, immersive storytelling! Feeling even more inspired and excited for what the future holds for immersive arts.

Earlier this week, our VR Rapid Prototyping Workshop brought together 120 Ulster University Animation and Games Design students for a hands-on creative challenge, led by award-winning VR Creative Director @ruxandra_gp . Students explored the future of immersive storytelling, and gained hands-on experience of development and industry insights from experts in the field. A huge thanks to @northernirelandscreen, @artscouncilni, @uuscreen @future.screens.ni, @belfastcitycouncil, and @digitalcatapult for their support in empowering the next generation of immersive creators in NI. 🎥 Behind the scenes of a very personal process 🎥 Creating my short film Thank You, Mom was more than just an artistic endeavor—it was a crash course in vulnerability, because I brought a story close to my heart and shared it with the world in ways I never imagined possible. I don’t often get the chance to make a behind-the-scenes video for my projects. Usually, I’m laser-focused on completing the work itself. But I am excited to be able to share some moments of creativity, collaboration, and discovery that made this film so meaningful. This project challenged me in so many ways, but when it was finished it also reminded me why I love what I do. Creating without a clear roadmap is a little like playing an escape room. You explore everything with an open mind and surprise yourself when you solve a tough challenge. 🎟️Thank you, mom’s screening @tribeca was a whirlwind of celebration. ✨The film is one of the five short films to be commissioned by Tribeca & @OpenAI to utilize SORA, an unreleased text-to-video platform. I am honored to be a director among this amazing cohort @nikyatu @abonniesituation @ellie.foumbi @rezawrecktion 🗣️ After the screening, I moderated a talkback with the directors to discuss the unique creative process each of us took in collaborating with SORA. 📸 Amazing photos of the event by @marsha_photo 🙏🏽 Grateful to the amazing Thank you, mom team who was able to attend in person, especially @cyhoodle who traveled to NYC from LA! 📰 Since the screenings, it’s been a lot of press interviews and critic reviews. 🎬Thank you, mom made its world premiere @tribeca. This narrative short film draws on my own life experiences and invites the audience to witness the life story of a woman through her journal entries, capturing pivotal moments that have shaped her from childhood to adulthood. These entries explore my profound experience of growing up in the aftermath of not only my father’s death but also my mother’s effort to rebuild our lives. This is one of my first times directing and creating a traditional/flat narrative short film. During the rapid three-week production of Thank you, mom—me and my incredible team of animators, artists, and technologists utilized Open AI’s SORA as a tool in a our production pipeline alongside other platforms such as Photoshop, ProCreate, and Premiere. *Next Lab Generation 2024* Otro año más, he formado parte del equipo de @nxlb_generation. Y he tenido la suerte de poder navegar por este evento en muchas de sus fases. Desde la coordinación de programación, contactando con los maravillosos ponentes que hemos tenido en esta edición, hasta el acompañamiento a los invitados, enfocada en su asistencia durante el evento. And I have been fortunate enough to be able to navigate this event in many of its phases. From coordinating the programming, contacting the wonderful speakers we've had this year, to accompanying the guests, focusing on their attendance during the event. An intense and beautiful journey, full of many projects that I will be revealing soon.
