POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Closing night at the Revelation Perth International Film Festival saw another screening of #doomscroller in the second WA Horror & SciFi Shorts session.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the film and genre filmmaking; last Sunday at The Backlot and tonight in not one but two cinemas at the Luna Leederville.

It was great to watch the film again sitting with the two Josh's and Shakira.

Congrats also to all the filmmakers in the earlier Get Your Shorts On: City of Vincent Film Project & Life in Pictures.

Excited to be working on the next draft of Doomscroller over the long weekend. Lots of feedback to consider in helping realise the vision for the film on the page.

The abuse of digital technology will no longer be tolerated. You have been warned #doomscroller

There I was, sitting in my favourite theatre venue in Perth; second row, dead centre, top of the thrust stage… and I was getting a little teary-eyed. This was it. The final time I'd ever be in here.

WAAPA Performing Arts and Link Dance students were gathered en masse at the Roundhouse Theatre for the rousing finale of Echolocation. A fitting and heartfelt farewell to the Mount Lawley campus.

My mind wandered to all the great productions I'd seen in this venue over the years - 2014's Festen, Urinetown the following year, last years’ Nora: A Doll's House, Andrew Lewis’ multimedia extravaganza of Macbeth, and so many more. All the musicals and plays; the days of Best Bits and Choice Cuts when the graduating Acting and MT students did their own revue shows; Shakespeare Awards; and even this year's Acting Showcase.

Wonderful performances and great memories. It hit me how much I'd miss not only this venue but all the other performance spaces at the Mount Lawley campus that had come to be an integral part of my theatregoing experience.

The crackle of expectation in the lobby when multiple productions were on during a performance slot.

The after show conversations with students who were all super talented, genuinely lovely, and engaging.

Discussions with proud parents, many of whom had flown in from interstate.

Getting to know staff members and see their passion and commitment to the students and the arts.

I would come to write reviews, join the Friends of the Academy, and even see students audition for screenplays I had written. Most of all, I revelled in the joy of watching productions that moved me, made me laugh, made me cry, made me think, and made me happy to be there.

Yes, there's some sadness about the closing of the Mount Lawley site but also immense excitement to see the new City campus. I can't wait to explore the state-of-the-art performance spaces and meet new students and watch more top-notch shows.

So thank you, Mount Lawley. It has been an honour and a joy to witness so much talent, commitment, and passion over the years.

The first post on the Perth Theatre Reviews blog was way back in 2012. There are 366 posts on that site as well as many separate mini-reviews and observations on the Perth Theatregoer Facebook page.

It's been an honour and a privilege to see something like 5-600 shows over those years. Professional, independent, community, student, and festival productions. Plus a stint as an adjudicator with the ITA for two years.

I adore the theatre. I enjoy writing about it. I've always tried to be entertaining, but above all, honest in my reviews.

As a writer, it was important to me that they were also well written, considered, and a little fun.

Lately, I've found it much harder to write reviews the way I do. I've taken that as a sign to move on and focus on my primary writing talent as a screenwriter.

You'll still see me around at shows. I love the magic of live performance far too much.

But for now, it's thank you and farewell from my theatregoing alter ego 🎭

I've been known to go to the theatre on occasion. It's bloody good for the soul.

All I ask is this:

A good story, well told.

I've been in a little bit of a funk lately so I'm really looking forward to this trio of upcoming WAAPA shows.

Develop a feature and be in a tv writing room all in the same month?! 😍❤️ Thank you @screenwest_ for supporting my kooky brain, potty mouth and ever growing writer’s neck hump. Exciting things brewing 🧙🏾‍♀️🧪

A wonderful WAAPA Open Day from Professor David Shirley talking eloquently about the standing of the Academy and its move into the state of the art ECU City Campus early next year; to all the tours, rehearsals, and presentations; so many students and staff on hand to answer questions throughout the day; the 1st year music theatre students wowing everyone in the Roundhouse; and Friends committee members talking to parents and aspiring students about the support we provide.

Hi friends and fam….I am making a film! Next weekend, we call action on #doomscroller written by Richard Hyde - Screenwriter and Directed by Tim Dean. We have assembled the most amazing crew, cast and filming locations. But I really need your help! We are self financing everything from camera and lighting equipment, costume, prosthetics and fake blood, and catering. If anyone has any $$ to spare, I would reallly really appreciate your support. Plus it’s tax deductible (except for family….sorry fam 😂). You’ll see your name up on that big screen in the thank you credits also!
Thank you so much for those who have already donated. Your support means the world to our little creative team ❤️🫶
