Summer has slipped into fall, and I’m not quite the same person who entered it.

This was the summer I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Life quickly became a strange mix of appointments, treatments, expenses, fear, hope, and questions I never imagined having to ask. When you are forced to look more honestly at the possibility of imminent death, you also begin looking more honestly at what you believe about life…and about God.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
—Psalm 46:1

Not a God who promises an easy road or immunity from suffering, but a God who is very present in the middle of it.

And He has been present in so many of you.

The prayers, messages, generosity, and encouragement from old friends and new have carried us in ways I’ll never fully be able to express. I am profoundly grateful.

And then there is Tray.

Steadfast, loving, serving, advocating, caring for me…and carrying burdens of his own that few people see. Cancer happened to my body, but in so many ways it happened to both of us. I will never take his love and faithfulness for granted.

Summer is gone now, and I don’t know what the next season holds.

But perhaps faith isn’t knowing what the next season will bring. Perhaps it is learning that whatever it brings, God will already be there.

So I enter this next season grateful…for life, for love, for all of you, and for a God whose goodness is not dependent upon my circumstances.

There has been sorrow and pain here. There has also been so much beauty.

And somehow, by the grace of God, there is still joy.

I wanted to share some highlights from the summer but I don’t even have pictures of everything I was able to enjoy. There were gifts of books, cards, plants, flowers, financial help, calls, texts and meeting new friends, neighbors… being whisked away to walk in nature and play in a creek, meals, matcha dates, visits, and very importantly, visits from almost all the kids… Tray’s and mine! These were sooo meaningful to me and also healing.

I’m not through this but I shared with Tray this last weekend that I could begin to see the horizon. 🤍#summer #franklintn #trustinggod

Your photographer’s energy matters way more than you might think.

This is the person who is going to be with you for basically your entire wedding day. They’re there in the quiet moments while you’re getting ready, when the nerves start kicking in, when the timeline gets a little chaotic, when you need someone to tell you what to do with your hands, and when the dance floor finally gets wild.

So when you’re choosing your wedding photographer, don’t JUST ask yourself, “Do I love their photos?”

Ask yourself, “What kind of energy do I want around me on my wedding day?” “How long have they been in the industry, and what is their experience with anything that might be thrown their way?!

If you want someone who can read the room, knows when to step in and when to disappear into the background, can put you at ease when you’re stressed, hype you up when you need it, wrangle your family with a smile, and then drop it low with you on the dance floor…
