Having my professor @cobrinhacharles teaching a seminar at my own school, and sharing in these learning moments alongside my students is truly special. Even after 14 years of training with Cobrinha—being part of his ADCC training camps, Worlds, Pan Ams— to continue being invited into his world where he is preparing athletes of the now, such as @thefuture809 , @kennedy_jiujitsu , and @mikeymusumeci —I remain grateful for the opportunities to keep my love for jiu jitsu fresh with a students’ mindset. I still have a lot to learn from him.

I have said to my students over the years, “You don’t go to a seminar ONLY to learn techniques.” (You can find plenty of those on YouTube.)

You go to witness the champion behind the technique—seeing the way they move and interact in a space, how they read a room, how they shift gears to the energy of the room, how thoughtfully they respond to random questions of a multi-aged audience of hobbyists and competitors. There’s a lot to be learned from observing mannerisms of the Grand Slam Champion.

You go for the opportunity to ask questions of their lifestyle, their discipline, their upbringing, their highs, their lows, their bounce backs—exploring answers to what created and continues to make their champion mindset tick.

You go for the unique immersive experience because there are things which can’t be explained—and the impact can only be felt.

You go because there is profound wisdom to be shared.
