FREE ALL AGES JAM & WORKSHOP!!

Son Jarocho’s musical vocabulary offers an enticing landscape for adventurous improvisers: rhythmic cycles that dance between 6/8 and 3/4, deceptively simple harmonic structures that invite endless melodic invention, and a conversational approach to music-making where listening and responding are as important as playing.

Mexican singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mónica María and jazz musician, composer, and educator Hans Barklis bring years of immersion in the tradition, studying and performing alongside Son Jarocho tradition bearers in Mexico and beyond. Together, they’ll explore the music on its own terms while inviting jazz musicians to discover new possibilities at the crossroads of these distinct but kindred musical worlds.

We’ll dig into traditional repertoire, including Declaraciones, using lead sheets as springboards for collective invention. Along the way, we’ll build interlocking grooves, experiment with rhythmic layering, and explore melodic improvisation within Son Jarocho’s distinctive harmonic and rhythmic frameworks. We might even turn the tables, bringing some Veracruz-inspired rhythmic and melodic ideas into familiar jazz progressions.

There may be singing, there may be zapateado, and there will certainly be plenty of musical conversation. The spirit is that of the fandango: a gathering where everyone contributes, everyone listens, and the music becomes something none of us could have imagined alone.

YOU DID IT: AND I’M CRYING

What in the WORLD. A few days ago the Kickstarter was at, like, 25% and I was losing sleep beyond how I always lose sleep…

But then people just showed UP. I think I’ve been crying from joy and gratitude for days and days.

There’s a whole community of artists that you are funding. This is a labor of love for Ji and I - but we have always been committed to our people and you’ve made that possible!!!

LATE PLEDGES ARE AVAILABLE!

Get any merch you want! Vinyl, t-shirts, super soft hoodies, you could even - if you WANT - have me make you one of my dad’s famous dutch baby pancakes from our long gone restaurant, Sanborn’s. All proceeds go toward Shadow Work.

Love y’all. Probably crying while I type this out on my pink glittery phone Nadia picked out for me.

Be extra. Be beyond what you think you can do. Be that and hype your friends.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

35 HOURS TO GO: VINYL, VINYL!

@objectpermrecords in Salem, Oregon has been nothing but professional, kind, and accommodating! We had a ridiculous deadline, a truly lengthy album, and tricky problems with the stamper. They met every obstacle with grace, enthusiasm, and generosity.

Jason even drove the vinyl to the release show and was at the merch table! He’s the best at breaking down how a record is made, and is the kind of person that makes me believe in good people doing good work. Please consider getting your next vinyl produced by Object Permanence!

45 HOURS TO GO: JASON QUIGLEY

@photojq really needs no introduction, but if you haven’t encountered the iconic photographer’s work, please go to his page and check out the years and YEARS of unforgettable live music shots, album art, and beyond.

This was a fun little deep dive into the concept for the album cover! I’ve long been obsessed with @marthagrahamdance Martha Graham not only influenced the cover, but partially inspired the first song “Minotaur” with her work “Errand Into the Maze”.

A note from the Artistic Director:

In my 10 years as the Director of PJCE Records, I have never seen an artist tackle a project as ambitious as Rebecca Sanborn's Shadow Work. PJCE has been there since its inception in 2021, so I was thrilled when Rebecca approached us about recording the album with our large ensemble and releasing it on PJCE Records.

Just like producing a season of concerts with a 12-member jazz band, an album of this scale — there are almost 30 artists involved — is a gargantuan feat. Grant funding and album sales only cover a small portion of the costs. With that in mind, I interrupt your regularly scheduled PJCE communications with an important request.

Will you help fund Shadow Work TODAY?

While PJCE Records partners with artists to release their albums, individual artists are responsible for recording and producing their own music. Funds raised from this Kickstarter campaign help Rebecca bridge the funding gap between the three (3!) grants she received from the Regional Arts & Culture Council, Music Oregon, and the Holler Fund and the significant costs of recording a body of work at this scale.
.
The Kickstarter closes on Thursday, September 24th at 9 am PT, so opt in to art, pick out an incredible offering from Rebecca, and pledge your support TODAY.

KYLEEN IS KING

@kyleen_king is the best and I’m so deeply grateful for her arrangement which closes Shadow Work. Kyleen is a friend to all and an unparalleled musician. We are so lucky to have her on this project!

Little known fact: Kyleen also contributed childcare for her niece Nadia while Ji and I recorded final vocals. Thank you!

p.s. I did too many takes and it’s like 1 am and I’m slurring my words, but you get the gist!! The people on this record are amazing!

RYAN IS RAD

Shadow Work would not exist without this guy. I’m proud to call him my collaborator and friend.

@ryanmeaghermusic is the person who asked me to write this song cycle in the first place, so we can all blame him for what’s happened lol

For the remainder of this kickstarter campaign, I am going to highlight the community of musicians involved in this project. I’m so lucky to have these adorable geniuses on this endeavor! Truly a group effort.

Thank you all!
