5 things Manaslu taught me about climbing big mountains 🏔️ (save this if you have an 8,000m peak, or any mountain objective, on your list)

1️⃣ Respect the snowpack.
Unforecasted snow piled up on the mountain, so we changed plans and turned around at 6,500m instead of pushing to 7,000m. The next day, an avalanche at 6,700m took the lives of two climbers. Summits are optional. Turning around is part of the game.

2️⃣ Slow and steady wins.
Around 6,300m I pushed hard once just to see how my body would respond. The next day a cough started. At altitude, the cold, dry air you’re gulping when you breathe hard irritates your airways, and a cough can drain you for the rest of the trip. A steady pace and a cold-air mask made a big difference for me.

3️⃣ Climbing technique matters.
So many people were exhausted by the icefall, and it often wasn’t fitness. It was technique. Inefficient crampon footwork and ice technique burn energy fast, and just 20 meters of steep terrain can punish you up high. Practicing these skills before the trip pays off.

4️⃣ Carbs, carbs, carbs.
Above 6,000m, my appetite dropped and fats and protein felt hard to get down and digest. Carbs are your body’s most oxygen-efficient fuel, which matters when there isn’t much oxygen to go around. What worked for me: Honey Stinger waffles, gels, carb drink mix during the day, and simple carbs like noodles for dinner.

5️⃣ Hydration is king.
It’s cold, so you don’t feel like drinking, but your body is losing water all day. Part of acclimatizing is your body shedding plasma to concentrate your red blood cells, and the dry air pulls moisture out with every breath. Drink before you’re thirsty, and add electrolytes.

What’s your best tip for moving in the mountains? Drop it below 👇 I’ll share my favorites in my stories.

There isn’t always going to be something great to show.

Sometimes, it’s turning around. Sometimes, it’s walking away. Sometimes, the mountain wins the day and you come back anyway.

Ryan Mitchell’s Manaslu story wasn’t a summit. It was two lives coming home, two oxygen-free descents from 6,500 meters, and a decision to leave when the mountain stopped making sense.

Because sometimes, the story isn’t about getting to the top. Sometimes, it’s about knowing when to stop and knowing you’ll be back.

Day 12 on Manaslu.

We will head back up this afternoon to camp 1. If conditions are perfect, camp 3 tomorrow and perhaps climb higher. We will turn around if we find unstable conditions- not worth dying for. Tracking link in @skylinemountainguides bio

Ryan Mitchell is showing the world that the ultimate pivot is possible.

Within the last few years, he's taken his massive success as a Minecraft YouTuber and transformed himself into a mountaineer with some of the sport's highest-reaching goals in his sights, including no-oxygen ascents of all 14 8000ers.

Listen to our latest episode with Ryan as we unpack what's inspired him.

Thousands of people have been displaced by devastating floods in northern Nepal.

Families have lost homes and belongings, and many are now staying in temporary shelters, schools and Buddhist monasteries.

Langtang Emergency Relief has worked alongside communities in this region for almost a decade. Those relationships mean the team can stay in direct contact with trusted local people who know which families have been displaced, what they need most and where donations can make the biggest difference.

Right now, that could mean food, clean water, clothing, bedding, hygiene supplies, medicine or supplies for children.

The people closest to this emergency know what their communities need.

"If you don't wanna die, you've gotta be willing to fail."

Ryan Mitchell has only been a mountaineer for a handful of years, but he's racking up a lifetime's worth of experiences already. A healthy amount of them have been failures, and he's taking the lessons they've taught him every time he goes back to the mountains.

Finally some clear views! 👀 @skylinemountainguides @ryanmitchellyt

We moved up to Dharmasala at 14,700 feet (4500 meters). Feeling good and enjoying getting acclimatized in a beautiful and green part of Nepal 🏔️

We’ll try to climb and ski Larke Peak (20,300 feet/6,200 meters) in the next couple of days. Weather has been quite poor and the forecast is less than perfect, so we’ll take what we get up there. 🤞

Ryan Mitchell went from Minecraft to Mt. Everest in 18 months. He's since climbed multiple peaks in the Himalaya and is on his way to attempt a no-oxygen ski descent of Manaslu. So how'd he do it?

Join us this week as we sit down with Ryan to talk through his remarkable experience to becoming a climber.

An earthquake hit the Mustang region of Nepal at 9:53 PM last night. 😬

Manaslu region seems unaffected by the earthquake that hit 50 miles/80km to the west of here 🙏

Not so subtle reminder that the Himalayas are a volatile environment. Beautiful but savage too.
