@lordgid that means you! I know it's sunny but the polytunnel is warmer and you can shelter out the wind. But not Disco, no Collies in our tunnels!

🌱You won't find another reel or post with this sowing list on it. Because it's ours!!! We have quite a unique set of plants and a seed collection from Agastache to Zanthoxylum. Alphabetised in an old ice cream tub🍦

Get out there, get some quality #peatfree compost and go for it! Seeds in the ground - the start of the next generation of plants to feed your bellies, bees, and spirit!

Anyway, back to work 🌱🌱🌱

Spooky. This gnarled apple tree almost looks like there's a weird, misshapen person in it...

OK, yes, that is actually Ryan 🙂 up a tree yesterday. We do a lot of pruning work at this time of year. This helps to make up for the almost nonexistent nursery income (we do mail-order plants and compost is now starting to sell, but if course all at the mercy of the weather), but it is also really satisfying work. Because we have the skills and knowledge we're usually called on to recover older, neglected trees, often ones that people inherit when they move house. It's usually the work of several seasons to fully achieve and this is our second year working on the trees in this garden, which is when you start to see the real results, revealing the new shape of what should be a much healthier tree with a chance of living a longer productive life. It feels good to slow down and start to think in terms of tree time, to try to "see" how it will look in 5 or 10 years.

If you're local to us and have apple, pear or any other fruit trees you want us to look at then get in touch. And if you want to learn how to look after your trees then we can offer 1-to-1 coaching (where you prune alongside one of us), or there is a little workshop planned in a school/community garden n Crich in Feb - info is on the site.

Urgent! Ryan is stuck on top of a pallet of freshly-delivered Sylvagrow Organic Peat-free compost. Please come* and buy some so he can get down.

*Collection from the nursery is currently by appointment only, or we can deliver locally (Belper, Crich, Wirksworth & further afield...). All the info is on our site!

If you missed the last post, this is also what we use as the base for our own tried and tested potting mix. It's the good stuff and if your only experience of "peat-free" up to now has been bags of dust from the garden centre then this is a serious upgrade. We also stock more superb peat-free composts from the Dalefoot range.

And obviously we're probably preaching to the choir with all this, but when we say "100% Peat Free" we mean not only do we not use it, but we don't supply compost from any company that is involved in peat extraction, and likewise any stock plants or seed we buy in come from other peat-free nurseries.

Plenty of food for thought as well as thought for food when Ryan Sandford-Blackburn of Earthed Up! came to #sheffieldbotanicalgardens yesterday

Ryan told the story of Earthed Up! and introduced us to the world of edible perennials - including some we can find in our own gardens. He is a passionate and enthusiastic speaker and he shared his knowledge in an informal, inclusive and informative session.

The talk attracted a large and engaged audience of @fobsheffield plus some new visitors who enjoyed the talk, asked lots of questions and bought a selection of peat-free plants from Ryan’s Earthed Up! nursery.

Many thanks to Ryan (and Carol) for joining us and sharing so much information and expertise - we will follow your progress with interest…….

For @fobsheffield who were unable to attend or who wish to watch again, we are pleased to report that we recorded the talk and it will be available on the password-protected area of our website in due course

We’re really looking forward to our @fobsheffield live lecture on Tuesday morning, when our speaker is Ryan Sandford-Blackburn, Director of Belper agroecological plant nursery Earthed Up!

An experienced grower, educator and permaculture designer, with a particular interest in growing plants for agroforestry systems in living soil, Ryan will explore the world of edible perennials - taking us on a journey of discovery into an array of plants we can grow and eat. Expect to learn of a new plant or recipe……..

He will also be bringing some plants for sale - cash or card accepted.

If you fancy joining us, the talk takes place in the Education Centre in #sheffieldbotanicalgardens on Tuesday 25 February at 10.30am. It’s free for @fobsheffield, visitors welcome just £5 payable on the door.

The talk will be followed at 1.00pm by our ‘Perfumes and Potions’ Public Tour - all welcome.
