Pumpkins, a shop reshuffle, new window, cute pups and getting cosy… so many highlights from last week in our little shop in Rye ➡️

It’s SO good to have lots of the new arrivals out in the shop now! We’ve been squirrelling lots of this away for months so it’s really great to have it out and to see that you love it as much as we do!! 😍💙

The Great Reed Warbler is one of the most secretive birds normally huddled down in the bottom of the reeds, you have to be very patient with this bird to get a photograph, it’s always a special moment when it does show I feel a real buzz that I’m the only person this day lucky enough to see this bird at this moment and then I want to share that moment with everyone and hopefully it will make you feel the same as I did, nature is very special and these moments are fleeting and how wonderful everything in nature is.

'Grasses, Mallow and Loosestrife' oil on board 8"x 8".

This painting is on display at the Discovery Centre at @ryeharbournr in an exhibition to celebrate the launch of the book 'Riversong'.
I am delighted to have this, and my painting ' Rye Windmill' included in the book.
'Riversong' is a collection of writing and art inspired by the rivers of Rye.
The exhibition is open until 31 October, and the book is available at the Discovery Centre at @ryeharbournr

A few weeks ago I had the absolute pleasure of walking up in the dunescape at Camber Sands with local photographer Terry Hulf. Terry has captured so many local artists, musicians and makers that I was very honoured to be invited to be ‘captured’ on roll film.

Terry made me feel very at ease as we walked up into the dunes. As he favours traditional roll film, is was great to hear the click and roll on as the shots were taken.

Walking and observing the changes in the landscape is integral to each new collection of work. I was casting the flowing marram grass with its late summer seed heads. After rolling the grasses into the damp clay, I carefully removed the plant from the clay, minimising disturbance to this fragile landscape.

Thank you Terry @notesfromalandscape , you have really captured me out in the wild landscape.

This new collection will be available at my two events in November in Rye. @ryeharbournr and @ryecreativectr .

Skylarks are beautiful when you get to see them very fast little birds with such a beautiful call, the stay well camouflaged in the grass and you get a fleeting glimpse when they fly up normally quite high and hover in one place just like the kestrels do, if you are lucky they will do this right above your head and look down at you it all happens so quick but when it does it is magical and a beautiful sight to see as you can see in this photograph hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

This Kestrel was the one of the highlights of the beginning of my photography journey I will never forget the buzz it gave me and this lasted for days if lifts you up so much to see things others don’t see and the beautiful nature we have around us and that we glimpse moments that others will never see and that makes it all so special which is why I post this on instagram because there is also others that can’t get to see theses wonderful moments and I hope it will also lift them like it does me.

Swans a large majestic waterfowl weighing among the heaviest flying birds up to 12-14 kg (around 30pounds) with a massive wingspan that can reach up to 3 metres (10feet) they can fly at speeds of 50-60mph, they live long lives for birds often surviving for over 20 years in the wild, they are really truly love birds with strong life long pair bonds. I was literally shocked the first time some took off in flight next to me the down force of the wings and the sound of the whoosh was impressive. They are so beautiful in their own right but with that perfect last golden sunlight they absolutely shine with beauty.

Remember how I mentioned in the past about the fabulous dog walks around us here at The Old Laundry?
Well, this is most definitely one of them - ably demonstrated by Jess’s pup: The Mighty Murph! @xx_jbuss41_xx
This is Rye Harbour Nature Reserve at sunset - @ryeharbournr - a three minute drive or an easy 35 minute walk from us at The Old Laundry. Beautiful, isn’t it? 🌅
Rye Harbour itself is often overlooked as a beach, in favour of the more well-known local ones, such as Camber Sands, with its 3.5 miles of soft golden sands or Pett Level and Winchelsea Beach with their Jurassic-era sunken forest, dinosaur fossils and dramatic sandstone cliffs.
But Rye Harbour has it’s own story to tell, with the beautiful little beach at the mouth of the River Rother and it’s amazing resident Grey and Harbour Seal colony.
The Harbour is also the home of the Discovery Centre, a fairly recent addition to the Nature Reserve and a fascinating magnet for visitors and locals alike, with amazing huge panoramic windows, and the cosy little @lime_kiln_cafe - its perfect for birdwatching - they even provide binoculars!!
Back in November 1928, Rye Harbour hit the news in the most tragic way - it was the scene of one of the worst @rnli disasters in history, when the Rye Harbour Lifeboat: the ‘Mary Stanford’ was lost at sea with all hands on board - no one survived and it devastated this small fishing village.
The impact of that tragedy is still felt today and there is the most beautiful memorial to those brave crewmen in the local churchyard. You can even walk out to the old Lifeboat house on the shore, from where the boat was launched in that terrible storm.
So next time you’re exploring Rye (or better still, taking a well-earned getaway at @the_old_laundry_rye!) why not spend some time wandering Rye Harbour and immerse yourselves in this beautiful little fishing village’s atmosphere?
