Realm Makers!! Shenanigans include:

✨I celebrated my birthday surrounded by nerds. I would have it no other way.

✨@gabrielle_knoll_author went on multiple side quests—including being sung to by 500 people, advocating for a can of soup, attempting to seduce a pigeon, building card towers wherever she went, and leaving a trail of mini Totoros in her wake. As always, her friendship is a gift.

✨Gabby and I dressed up as classic storybook characters and it was iconic.

✨@mariposa.aristeo brought lightsabers. She let us play with the lightsabers. The Story Embers team promptly devolved into chaos.

✨@rhia.g.adley brought a sword. She let me hold the sword. Rhia is now my favorite person.

✨@millieflorenceauthor and @laurendfulter_author dropped in and brought the sunshine with them. I didn’t see them for half as long as I would have liked, but even their short visit made Realm Makers better.

✨5 hours of brainstorming on the drive home wherein nothing was accomplished except breaking Nicole’s and Gabby’s brains.

Honorable mentions go to: @naomithewriter and her fantastically violent hugs, @yeetarandomwriter for being herself, @nicoledustwriter because she’s the cutest, @mariellehenningcreates who I didn’t even know was there until the night before I left (it was tragic), @samsleepstoryteller who deserves a trophy for dressing up as Steve from Blue’s Clues, @rysaarcher who is one of my oldest blogging pals, @writermarlalouise for being the coolest teenager I’ve ever met, and @eepsicle (and her sister, who’s name I will not attempt to spell because I won’t get it right) for impeccable fashion.

My goal this year was to talk to more people, and my goodness, I have no regrets. To all the lovely souls I met over the weekend—you are my favorite. Thank you for making the writing community such a beautiful place. ❤️

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I arrived at the Realm Makers conference.

I knew that there would be a lot of writers there, and I was aware that many of the sessions I listened to would help me with my writing, but that’s about it.

So the minute I stepped into the hotel, I was completely overwhelmed…and a little freaked out.

At first I was overwhelmed because I thought I was in WAY over my head (there were a ton of people, they were all in groups, and I had to talk to them???), but then someone came up and invited me to hang out with her group, and that’s when I started to realize what Realm Makers was all about.

Going to Realm Makers reminded me of why I write.

Writing is not—and has never been—a competition.

The fact that writers can get together and talk about their stories and get excited about other people’s stories is so amazing, and important.

As a writer, I spend a lot of my time alone…writing. And sure, I write for myself, and I write for God, but at the end of the day, I write for people. People who love fun characters and good stories.

The community of writers who attend Realm Makers is fantastic. I felt right at home among people who shared my values and passion for storytelling.

I’m so grateful for the connections and the new friends I made this weekend. I’m so excited to see what God will do with you and your stories.

It was also a lot of fun to meet those of you who I met here on Instagram, or through Pinterest, or my website and books (so thanks for being brave enough to come up and say hello)!

And of course, I want to thank all the speakers who took the time to come and share their knowledge. I’ve gone home feeling equipped and more than ready to write my next book.

Thank you so much!
