Middle grade books we love, Halloween edition!
My students love scary books and read them year round, but in October everyone tries out books on the spookier side. Check out what we’re reading this month in the #schoollibrary! #middlegradebooks #horrorbooks #spookyseason #weneeddiversebooks

“Hide and Seeker” by Daka Hermon @dakahermon
This is the first in a shared universe of books where kids games have sinister outcomes! The newest one “Level Up” uses a cell phone game!

“The Jumbies” by Tracey Baptiste @traceybaptistewrites
A Caribbean folklore story! Some of the most vivid descriptions of the creatures that will haunt your nightmares.

“The Cursed Moon” by Angela Cervantes @angelacervantes_author
We love this book! A scary story about scary stories — and you know I love any book with a cat feature!

“The Boo Hag Flex” by Justina Ireland @justina.ireland
We don’t talk enough about Southern haints and haunts and this is a great introduction. I still get shivers from the descriptions of the boo hag!

“Omega Morales and the Curse of El Cucuy” by Laekan Zea Kemp @laekanzeakemp
I love any book that includes Mexican folklore because I love learning about them from my students! Omega Morales is a great character and we’re loving her books.

“Down Came the Spiders” by Ally Russell @onedarkally
My students love all of Ally Russell’s books — I rarely have her books on a display for a day before they get checked out! This book isn’t talked about enough because as someone who hates the feeling of spider webs or the idea of creepy crawlies (like I respect their right to live, I just don’t want it in my face) this is the absolute scariest of her books. Makes me itchy just talking about it.

“Lost on Doll Island” by Cassandra Ramos-Gomez @writercass
My kids read with the covers first — I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover but look at it. Dolls are inherently creepy and this book is quickly making its way through my students because they see their friends with it and immediately put it on hold!

“Read at Your Own Risk” by Remy Lai @rrremylai
Speaking of books covers — LOOK AT IT. The kids don’t even both reading the description, it’s a check out at fi

I LOVED this book! It is about an 8th-grade boy and his family. He moves from New York to Houston with his Dad. Dad has some mental health issues. Mom is away for work. I loved hearing the Pakistani folk tales woven into his daily life. There is a bully, mental health issues, teen angst, and family love. This is a Lone Star book. This book is for teens. I think younger kids can read it.

OH MY GOSH I am FINALLY done with the embroidery on my bookshelf sweater. A bit more work now to put it all together but I am so glad to be done with the embroidery!

The back is adult books, plus a bottom shelf of more middle grade, which could not be contained to one sleeve, and a side panel of plays.

Now to construct it into a sweater!
