In Fridays class we went back to simple mark making and took that into our paintings, seeing just how little actually needs to be said to communicate what something is. Keeping it free and fast.

In our Permission to Play class this term, we’ve explored different ways of getting into a painting, from charcoal and loose mark-making on paper before, to working with brushes, palette knives and colour, gradually braving the canvas.

We’ve looked at how to start when the white canvas feels daunting, whether that’s through a quick sketch in one bright colour, a wash of colour or simply allowing the first marks to lead the way.

A big part of our experience and experimenting has been learning colour through using only red, blue and yellow with a touch of black and white, we’ve discovered how much is possible through mixing our own colours and how colour can become its own source of inspiration.

We’ve then painted with our own mixed colour palette inspired by references, torn them up, rearranged them and used them as our inspo for our own pieces.

We have been focusing on loosening the hand, opening the eye, finding flow and learning to trust ourselves. Finding the freedom to explore, play and not think too much 😊

For the last few weeks in Permission to Play Fridays, we’ve been getting curious about faces.

We’ve turned eyes, ears, noses and mouths upside down, drawn without erasers, played with charcoal and mixed skin tones from just the primary colours and white, and spent time really looking instead of assuming. Looking at an eye as shapes, colours, shadows, valleys and mountains and tiny details rather than simply “an eye”.

We’ve gone from playing on paper to painting on canvas, discovered that canvas can feel a little intimidating, and practised giving ourselves permission to loosen up, trust the process, and keep playing.

One of my favourite parts has been seeing everyone reconnect with the curiosity they had as children. Remembering what it feels like to make marks without worrying whether they’re right or wrong. Learning to not listen to outside noise and critics and to trust our own hand.

And wow... the growth.

Not just in the paintings, but in the confidence to look longer, trust what you see, and keep going when things hit that awkward stage. We had lots of fun moments and lots of quiet focused moments.
It’s been divine. When last did you draw or paint a face? Come and play, it’s fun.
