@columbiaclimate & @columbialawschool's Sabin Center for Climate Change Law develops legal tools to combat the #climatecrisis.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Data center development is accelerating rapidly across New York and around the country, placing unprecedented demands on electricity systems, water resources, and land.

But local governments have the power to shape the future of data center adoption and energy systems through smart, proactive policies.

That’s why the Model Climate Laws Initiative, a joint project from @sabincenter and @environmentaladvocatesny, in partnership with @climatemayors and @climate_xchange developed a NEW model law to help local leaders understand the tools at their disposal and ensure that data centers are built sustainably, energy grids and resources are protected, and taxpayers aren’t footing the bill.

Yesterday, EANY brought together 30 climate, policy, government, and community leaders, including half a dozen New York State Assemblymembers, for our first-ever State & Local Climate Policy Symposium. 🌎

Across seven conversations, we tackled the issues New Yorkers are feeling right now: rising home insurance costs, housing affordability, utility bills, food waste, data center development, and the rollback of federal environmental protections.

We’re proud of the conversations and connections that came out of this year’s Climate Week, and ready to turn those conversations into action.

🌊 Marine carbon dioxide removal could support climate action but faces major scientific, technical, and governance challenges, according to a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report, whose standing committee members include Sabin Center for Climate Change Law deputy director Romany Webb and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory oceanographer/carbon cycle scientist Galen McKinley.

“The ocean is too large a part of the carbon cycle to ignore, and we need every viable tool for addressing climate change. But the case for marine carbon dioxide removal at scale has to be built on evidence we do not yet have. Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) remains promising, but there are still major uncertainties about how it would work in the ocean, how much carbon it would actually remove, and what it would take to scale responsibly,” says McKinley.

“Marine CDR involves perturbing the ocean, a global commons that all countries and all people have an interest in protecting. Existing legal frameworks were largely developed with other activities in mind, and they often fit awkwardly around approaches that may pose environmental risks but are ultimately intended to deliver climate benefits. Unless clearer governance frameworks are put in place, advancing marine CDR may prove impossible,” says Webb.
