What a beautiful afternoon at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute ✨

Our Celebration Without Borders with Sabreee invited us into the rich history and culture of the Gullah Geechee communit. We learned how traditions, storytelling, and even materials like rice carry deep cultural meaning and connection.
Participants didn't just listen—they created.

Using rice as a medium, we explored art as both expression and remembrance.
Moments like these remind us how powerful it is to learn through culture, creativity, and community. 💫

Thank you to @bhamcivilrights for partnering with us for the year long arts series The View From Here funded by a @cityofbirmingham Community Arts Grant.

The Gullah/Geechee people are descendants of Africans who were enslaved on the rice, indigo, and Sea Island cotton plantations of the lower Atlantic coast. Many came from the rice-growing regions of West Africa. The nature of their enslavement on isolated island and coastal plantations fostered a unique culture with deep African retentions that remain clearly visible today in the Gullah/Geechee people’s distinctive arts, crafts, foodways, music, and language.

This history and cultural legacy will be honored as part of The View From Here (TVFH), Bare Hands’ year-long arts series exploring perspective, identity, and place. TVFH officially launches on March 7 at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute featuring visting Gullah visual artist Sabreee, marking the beginning of a dynamic season of programming that will continue throughout the year. Through visiting artists, community arts days, pop-up performances, exhibitions, and interactive workshops, The View From Here invites participants to reflect on how culture shapes the way we see the world and to celebrate the extraordinary within the everyday.

Register for the FREE launch of TVFH series on March 7th with the link on our bio.

The real magic isn't about WHERE you are. It's about learning to love your life, right where you are. The rest starts to fall into place.
