Two historic and competing anti-lynching exhibitions were held in New York City in early 1935: one organized by the NAACP, the other by the Artists Union. Both recruited an array of artists to display work that would build public opposition against these horrific killings and force the federal government to act.

Why did two very different organizations - one representing the Black civil rights establishment, the other a more radical and Communist-leaning base - each turn to artists to drive home their anti-lynching messages? Because, as one of their catalogues declared, "Pictures can fight!"

How are artists today building on that legacy of promoting freedom and pushing the culture forward? Join us this Saturday, October 10, at Brooklyn Public Library for a dialogue between artists @sabri sundos and @patrickdougher titled CREATE FREEDOM.

Held as part of UPRISING/DOWNFALL: Repression and Resistance in the Making of Democracy, on Saturday, October 10, 7-11pm. Presented by Brooklyn Public Library and BPL Presents. Brian Tate, Guest Curator.

Free RSVP at the link in the bio. Please share widely and don’t miss.
