Lateral Movement

Anyone can shoot two targets from one spot. But can you move between them without letting go of the gun?

This is lateral movement with the pistol. Draw, put two on the left target, then move right past the barricade and put two on the right target, staying connected to the pistol the whole way.

The standard:
• Pistol from the holster, starting at the numbers
• Two targets at 10 yards, with a barricade between the two shooting positions
• Draw, 2 rounds on the left target, move right, 2 rounds on the right target
• Finish stopped and stable, weight 50/50, in a low, athletic stance

If a round leaves the A-zone, the rep doesn’t count.

A clean rep:
1. On the beep, draw and put two rounds on the left target as quickly as you can.
2. Once your second shot breaks, look to where you’re going before your feet move.
3. Stay connected to the pistol as you exit.
4. Move your feet without crossing them.
5. Take short chop steps into a three-step entry so the barricade is just in view and the right target is in front of you.
6. Have the gun at eye level and on the right target before you stop, then put two rounds on it.

What I’m focused on is staying connected to the pistol through the whole move. I drag my right elbow over to give myself momentum to exit, so I keep my master grip from the first target to the second and don’t need a new grip when I get there. This is what I prefer for shorter movements of 3 to 5 yards. On longer movements, where speed between positions is the priority, taking a hand off the gun and using your arms for momentum is generally the better option.

Run it and comment your time.

The Blake Drill

1.52 on one target. 1.41 on three.

Mike runs a Bill Drill first to set his pace, then tries to make the Blake Drill sound exactly like it.

The standard:
• Rifle, starting at low ready
• Bill Drill first: one target, 6 rounds
• Blake Drill: three targets 1 yard apart, 2 rounds on each
• 10 yards

A clean rep:
1. Low ready, eyes on a specific spot on the first target.
2. On the beep, two rounds on that spot.
3. Eyes go to a spot on the next target first.
4. Two rounds as soon as the dot gets to where you’re looking.
5. Same on the third target.
6. Keep your eyes on each target until you’re done shooting.

Transitions are the low-hanging fruit on this one. Mike’s goal is for the time between targets to match the time between his shots, so the whole string sounds like a Bill Drill. His Bill Drill was a 1.52 and his second Blake Drill was a 1.41 with all A’s from 10 yards, right at the top 7-yard standard and about the same pace.

Precise vision is key to this drill. Pick a small, specific spot on each target and let your eyes lead the rifle from one spot to the next. Stay visually focused on that spot until both shots are complete, then shift your eyes to the next target and allow the sights to follow. The goal is efficient, controlled transitions with no wasted movement or unnecessary delay between shots.

Run a Bill Drill, then a Blake Drill, and post both times.

Recoil hides what your hands do to the gun as the shot breaks.

The 50/50 Drill

One target at 15 yards with a pistol. One round in the chamber, magazine out. Draw and fire, then press the trigger a second time as quickly as possible as soon as your dot is back on target.

That second press is a click. With no recoil, you can see two things: whether the dot came back to where the first shot broke, and whether your firing hand tension is increasing.

Dot dips low and left on the click for a right-handed shooter: you are pushing into the gun in anticipation of recoil.

The fix is keeping your firing hand tension consistent and remaining target focused the entire time.

No times on this one. It’s an observation drill. Target focused and dot aware.

Save this for your next range day.

A class isn’t the culminating event. It’s one step in your progression. This is who we are.

Criterion One is a shooting performance company. We don’t just build classes. We build processes. You train the standards before you show up. The class is designed to refine you as a shooter and test those standards on demand. You leave with a program to keep going.

Built for serious defensive shooters, law enforcement, military and competitors.

Our mission:
Criterion One develops complete performers through criteria-based training in shooting, physical readiness and mental execution. Our standard aligns clear outcomes, repeatable processes and demonstrated performance to guide continuous improvement.

In practice: every drill resolves to a number you either hit or you don’t.

Our method:
Define. Establish the outcome and what successful performance requires.
Build. Develop the component skills and organize them into a repeatable system.
Train. Practice with intent and use feedback.
Prove. Evaluate performance against defined criteria.
Refine. Find the gap, adjust, and prove it again.

Use the same loop anywhere you perform: dry fire, live fire, a workout, a match or a live operation.

Our team is made up of professionals in shooting, physical performance and mental performance.

Start with a free trial of the Standards app. It builds your training plan and scores every session against a standard. Classes are coming in 2027.

Trust the process. Prove the performance.

Draw to A-Zone — 25 yards

My average on this one was 1.63. My best was a 1.40.
Today I ran a 1.30, then a 1.24.

Once you know what right feels like, push the edge and try to break it. That’s where the failure reps are. Train at the speed of discomfort, but stay aware of what’s going on: where the dot landed, where the tension crept in, why the shot went where it did.

For training this drill specifically, work on responding to the beep sooner and watching your dryfire on video to look for inefficiency’s or waisted movement.

I record every rep in the Criterion One app, times, hits and notes, so I know what my average actually is, not what I think it is. More on the app in the next few weeks so stay tuned.

Save this for your next range day.

Your misses are teaching you more than your hits.

@hubermanlab put it plainly on @joeroganexperience: you don’t learn from passive reps. The friction of going for it and sometimes missing is what tells the brain to change. The frustration you feel when a drill won’t come together is the first gate of learning opening. Stay in it a little longer.

Then sleep. That’s when the circuits actually change. Come back a few days later and you’re closer.

If every rep is clean, you’re not asking enough of yourself.

Save this for your next session.

I love being able to share this sport with my family and getting to compete right next to my loving wife @sabrinagtherapy. Nothing makes me work harder than hearing my kids scream “Go Daddy” or “Go Mommy”. The best part is hearing them say how they can’t wait to compete too. #ttg #ttgskirmish @ttg.skirmish.florida @thetacticalgames

The family that shoots together wins together at the @ttg.skirmish.florida . Proud of @sabrinagtherapy for coming out and not only winning her division but taking the win overall in the sand bag weave event beating 34 other participants. Did I mention she also beat most of the men’s intermediate athletes overall!!! All this while both our kids cheered us on!!!! That’s one strong Momma!
