The common generational refrain, “I ate that back in the day and I’m fine”, overlooks a critical reality: the food on supermarket shelves today is fundamentally different from the food of a few decades ago. When older generations were growing up, even packaged or convenient foods were made from relatively simple, recognizable whole ingredients. A loaf of bread contained flour, water, yeast, and salt, rather than a cocktail of chemical dough conditioners, texturizers, and extended shelf-life enzymes. Comparing the diet of the past to the diet of the present is a false equivalency, because the modern food supply chain has undergone a massive industrial shift, transforming traditional staples into highly engineered products.

Today, the prevalence of synthetic additives, artificial preservatives, and industrial substitutes has fundamentally altered the biological impact of what we eat. Modern ultra-processed foods are systematically loaded with high-fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, chemical dyes, and artificial flavor enhancers designed to maximize shelf-life and trigger overeating. These modern synthetic compounds place a completely different metabolic burden on the human body compared to the simpler ingredients of the mid-20th century. Consequently, replicating the exact diet of “back in the day” using today’s standard grocery items means consuming a chemical cocktail that simply did not exist a generation ago.

Check out the comments section for the most common toxic ingredients that have become widely used in the last 20 years and their health impacts 🥺
