When I created #BecauseItMatters a few months back, I envisioned this platform to touch on more than just DEI. Human rights, intersectionality, social justice, and financial literacy were all apart of the plan. One of the largest issues I wanted to highlight was mental health. 🧠 Today (September 10) is World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide affects more people than we think. Globally, someone takes their own life roughly once every 40 seconds. There are several preventative steps that can be taken before that ultimate decision is made. 🙏🏾 If you or someone you know is struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts, there is help for you. Just know, you don’t have to suffer alone. 💛

On January 21, 2021, America witnessed the inauguration of the first Black/Asian woman Vice President after a tumultuous year filled with white supremacy, racial violence and a global pandemic. As we continue to navigate our way through these changing times, it is with honor that we accept the responsibility of preserving the Apple @ Pioneer Place panels that reflect the responses of so many that were witnesses to last summers’ uprisings and the joint call to action against institutionalized violence and white nationalism. As we honor those who have been murdered, our hearts ache hardest from those who were murdered right here in our city of Portland. Please continue to carry their names: Deonte Keller, Kendra James, Jason Washington, Terrell Johnson, Patrick Kimmons, Quanice Hayes, Aaron Campbell and too many names. Black Lives Still Matter. . If you are an artist that participated in this mural, please reach out to us - we’d love to hear from you and keep you connected to these pieces. If you are interested in learning more about the work we do, please visit our website: www.dontshootpdx.org. 📸 @m.martinezphoto
