October is National ADHD Awareness Month. Racial disparities in ADHD diagnosis are largely due to conscious and unconscious bias in healthcare providers5. You deserve a mental health provider that you trust.

Prioritizing sleep is the first step in caring for yourself. Treat yourself to a relaxing bedtime routine and make your bedroom a cozy, tranquil space that helps ease you into sleep. Seek help if you’re not able to get enough sleep, or feel tired when you wake up.

See the link in bio for more info about sleep and sleep hygiene.

“Systemic racism and unequal conditions add an extra threat to mental health. To top this, historical and current health care options don’t provide BIPOC with the quality care they deserve. This can be made worse by societal stigmas around mental health care. It’s helpful to be curious and honest about your own mental health, even if those around you aren’t addressing mental health.

Many people don’t see therapy or mental health services as an option because of societal or cultural pressures. Some in these communities are forced to break through the shame, fear, discomfort, and vulnerability often associated with mental health care. For groups already subjected to discrimination, stigma only further hinders their ability to seek mental health treatment. In addition to racial and cultural stigmas, there are also self-stigmas that individuals place on themselves surrounding the idea of mental health issues. There’s a belief that if you need medication or therapy, you are crazy; however, this negative association doesn’t just come from society but frequently stems from an internal monologue.”
.
Unlearn the stigma of counseling and lean into the wellness and healing you deserve!

What’s your favorite form of self-care? Whatever self-care looks like for you, self-care is not selfish. You deserve to feel good every day. Also, you can’t give much to others when your own tank is empty.

Self-care could mean many things:

Taking a break from others
Pausing when you’re upset
Combating critical thoughts with self love
Giving yourself a compliment
Journaling
Coloring or doing art
Taking a walk or getting a quick breath of fresh air
Spending time with a friend
Taking a bath
Watching a movie
Reading a book
Talking to a therapist
Hugging a friend or family member

Approximately 18% of US adults have a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year, and approximately 4% of adults have a serious mental illness.
.
Mental and behavioral disorders are among the leading causes of disability in the U.S., accounting for 13.6% of all years of life lost to disability and premature death.
.
Our community has a long way to go before we can be confident we are providing equitable access to mental health. Safer Space for BLM is taking the first step by partnering with local mental health clinicians seeking to address the disparity of access to mental health support for those who identify as BIPOC and those engaged in the BLM movement.

What memorable books and articles have you read this year? Today we at Safer Space encourage reading as a daily habit and celebrate all the ways it can strengthen who we are as individuals.

Reading reduces stress, makes us more imaginative, strengthens our critical thinking, and gives us perspectives we can’t get anywhere else.

Scrolling is nice, and short videos are engaging, but reading print books is still as important as ever!

Overall, mental health conditions occur in Black and African American (B/AA) people in America at about the same or less frequency than in White Americans. However, the historical B/AA experience in America has and continues to be characterized by trauma and violence more often than for their White counterparts.
.
Help-seeking behavior is affected by mistrust of the medical system and often begins with faith-based outreach. Unfortunately, B/AA providers, who are known to give more appropriate and effective care to B/AA help-seekers, make up a very small portion of the behavioral health provider workforce. Because of these factors and more, B/AA people are more likely to experience chronic and persistent, rather than episodic, mental health conditions.
.
Our community has a long way to go before we can be confident we are providing equitable access to mental health. Safer Space for BLM is taking the first step by partnering with local mental health clinicians seeking to address the disparity of access to mental health support for those who identify as BIPOC and those engaged in the BLM movement.
