🏆 TIME Best Inventions 2026
🤖 Meet Thorvald, our autonomous agricultural robot
🌱 Protecting crops with UV-C light
Farming with Light™

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Congratulations to @SagaRobotics’ Thorvald on being named to @TIME's list of the Best Inventions of 2026!

At Donum, Thorvald operates autonomously at night, using UV-C light to help protect our vines from disease. This innovative technology reduces our reliance on chemical fungicides, complements our regenerative farming practices, and supports our commitment to growing exceptional fruit while caring for the land.

What happens when robots work the vineyard night shift?

Farming with Light!🌙

On October 22, Tri-Valley Conservancy and Thorvald by Saga Robotics are bringing a live demonstration to Page Mill Winery, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM.

Thorvald glides through the vines on its own, using UV-C light to suppress powdery mildew and helping growers reduce fungicide use.

📍 Page Mill Winery, 1960 S Livermore Ave., Livermore

And just so you know growers, the Thorvald V3.1W is eligible for a $97,000 base voucher through California CORE when purchased through an approved dealer.

Questions? Reach out to caine.thompson@sagarobotics.com or karstein.brynestad@sagarobotics.com, or call (707) 738-8456.

Powdery mildew may want to rethink its evening plans. 🪩✨

What looks like a light show is actually a tool for fighting grapevine disease.

In a 2026 Sustainable Ag Expo online course, David Gadoury, Cornell University, explores how UV light can be used to manage powdery mildew and other grapevine pathogens.

Applied at night, UV light disrupts the fungus’s DNA and prevents it from reproducing, offering growers another approach to disease management.

Two-day ticket holders get access to the full online course library, including 8.5 hours of DPR and 11.5 hours of CCA continuing education!

Attend the Expo...then keep learning online and earning CE hours on your own schedule.

🎟️ Get your ticket at SustainableAgExpo.org

Join us for our most requested workshop!

This is a great opportunity to bring your team and discuss the benefits and limitations of various undervine weed management implements and more.

With demonstrations from:
🍇 @napafarmingcompany - new hydroweeder + other tools
🍇 @clemens.info - no-till seed drill plus other equipment
🍇 @pellencamerica - Under Vine Cultivator (UVC)
🍇 @sagarobotics - Thorvald Autonomous UV Robot for mildew & botrytis
🍇 TWE - team approach to weed management

Join us Thursday, October 29, 2026 at BV 10. Bring your tractor operators! There will be Spanish support.

This event is kept free by generous sponsorship from Napa Farming Company and Saga Robotics.

Great coverage from Lucy Hodgman and the @sfchronicle on how @sagarobotics Thorvald is being used in California vineyards to manage powdery mildew with UV-C light and to advance sustainable and regenerative viticulture by minimizing chemicals, carbon emissions and soil compaction in wine growing.

Thorvald is working with winegrowers, helping growers reduce fungicide use, cut tractor passes and lower carbon emissions, while also supporting control of Botrytis and sour rot. The article highlights the scale the technology is beginning to reach with more than 100 robots being deployed in Californian vineyards.

A big thank you to Russell Weis, Toby Halkovich and the team at Walsh Vineyard Management for organizing the visit and for their leadership in bringing this technology into commercial vineyard operations. Their team has been an important part of showing what farming with light can look like; Light on chemicals, light on carbon, light on soil compaction.

And thank you to Lucy for taking the time to come out, see Thorvald working at night, and telling the story so thoughtfully.

The shift toward chemical free, lighter, electric and autonomous vineyard equipment is already underway.

A summer I’ll always be grateful for. 🍇

From working across some incredible vineyards and preparing for one of the earliest harvests we’ve had, to learning more about viticulture, vineyard operations, and everything that goes into producing a great crop.

Grateful for the long days, early mornings, the people I worked alongside, and everything I learned along the way. Now onto the next chapter in Valencia. 🇪🇸

While most of us sleep, @sagarobotics Thorvald robots are at work.

Here at Castoro Cellars, our robots move through the vineyard at night using UV-C light to protect vines and fruit from diseases — reducing the need for fungicides while taking diesel, compaction and unnecessary chemical inputs out of the system.

There’s something pretty special about seeing a vineyard illuminated like this in the middle of the night.

Quiet. Electric. Autonomous.

This is what we mean by Farming with Light™ — using technology to grow healthier fruit while leaving a lighter footprint on the land.

A glimpse of where winegrowing is heading.

New from me in Harpers (£): Green #wine tech: how drones, robotics, satellites, and AI are helping make vineyards more sustainable (missed this when it ran last month!) Had a great trip to the North Coast last week visiting customers of @sagarobotics. The UV robots started treating vines at the beautiful @donumestate. The light from the Thorvald robot made for some striking views of the art.

This week we began a trial with a @sagarobotics Thorvald robot, using UV-C light to help control powdery mildew without fungicide sprays. The light disrupts the fungus before it can grow and spread, helping protect the vines and leaves. The same light protecting the vineyard also transformed the experience of the art in the vineyards, illuminating Jaume Plensa’s ‘Sanna’.
