Belly binding has been a part of postpartum traditions all over the world for thousands of years. Unique belly binding techniques can be found in the birth traditions of Africa, Malaysia, Japan, and Latin America.

Many of these traditions use their own unique tying techniques. Such as the knotted bengkung bind from Malaysia, the sarashi wrap from Japan and faja stemming from several different cultures in Latin America. They all however, serve a similar purpose to provide physical and emotional support during the postpartum period.

Bengkung belly binding technique uses a long strip of cloth to wrap around the abdomen from the hips to the ribcage. Women are traditionally wrapped as soon after birth as possible, ideally on day five and then worn for 40 days or longer as needed. The Bengkung belly binding technique is rooted in Malaysian culture for the postpartum woman. The best time to do this is within the first 6 weeks after birth. This helps things move back in place more easily. It is recommended that the bind be worn for up to 12 hours and then taken off for 12 hours. #BellyBind #PostpartumCare #BengkungTechnique

My hormones are shifting, emotions are loud, and my spirit is trying to land back into one body after carrying two. That’s why belly binding is such a powerful tool in the first forty days.

The names may vary depending on the culture.

the womb needs to be held.

Belly binding focuses on :
• Supporting the womb as it shrinks
• Helping the organs settle
• Improving posture and grounding
• Easing lower-back tension
• Stabilizing the emotional body

• Holding you during the most vulnerable weeks of healing

Belly binding is structure not snapping back .
It’s containment.
It’s safety inside your own body again.

They told us to bounce back — but have we ever stopped to ask… back to what?
A system that rewards exhaustion, idolises appearance over wellbeing, and convinces us to buy more in the pursuit of feeling enough.

Somewhere along the way, women were conditioned to believe recovery was a race — for work, for validation, for a version of ourselves we’ve long outgrown.

But the art of belly binding has never been about vanity — it’s a sacred, ancestral ritual of care.
As I wrap my Bengkung by @Sageabay, I feel the quiet metamorphosis of my body — not shrinking, but restoring.
Supporting the organs as they find their way home.
Supporting the spine and hips that softened for birth.
Supporting the womb as it regains balance.
Supporting me — in this tender transformation.

Because healing isn’t linear, and it definitely isn’t a contest.
To the women who “bounce back,” I see you — this isn’t about judgement, it’s about permission: to recover slowly, softly, and sacredly, in your own time.
