Culture, and the artists and cultural workers who help shape it, are an integral part of all revolutionary movements. In “Culture and the Moment,” Sage Crump introduces a new essay series from the Culture Justice Initiative (CJI) called “Why Culture Matters to Justice.” Sage describes the strategies oppressive forces use to keep us in a culture of repression and dominance, and argues that culture is a living, evolving organism that shapes us all and has the capacity to be shaped through intention.

The essays in this series are designed to grow our understanding of culture as a force for transformation. Through these works, we hope to provoke dialogue, influence strategy, and deepen practice.

Whenever I return from a @weareili space, I return with greater intention to honor my ancestors, keep cultural praxis at the center of the work, and further imagine freedom. DREAM BIGGER, WITH, AND BEYOND. I leave with a deeper understanding of myself, a richer connection to this beautiful community that we are building across oceans, borders, and ponds, and I carry with me, an unrivaled motivation to continue in this work. My work. World building.

FamILI, spirit, ancestry, connection, celebration, communion, a shared walk, joy, play, reflection, resilience, and innovation.

Thank you: to ILI for holding me all these years and continuously extending an invitation to me to see, be seen, and shape this thing we love; to Damia, Wood, and New Orleans for holding each of us with such poise and generosity, the elder cultural leaders - both in New Orleans and within our ILI community - y’all are beacons/thank you for sharing your light. To the facilitators and partners, forever grateful to each of you.

It was an honor to be with you all again. Until next time! ✌🏾🖤

Congratulations to WOCA member, Sage Crump @sagesense , who was recently appointed Co-Executive Director of the National Performance Network (NPN) @npnarts . After serving twelve years on the organization's leadership team, Sage will now continue her work alongside her fellow Co-Executive Director, Caitlin Strokosch.

Having known Sage as a dedicated mentor for WOCA's Leadership Through Mentorship program and lifelong organizer, we are excited to see the impact she, alongside Caitlin and the NPN team, will bring forth when intention, resources, and support are shared for the benefit of artists, organizations, and their communities.

Show your love in the comments and read the full press release on the NPN page, @npnarts !
