real love/hate relationship with 2024

2 years ago, I had the chance to sit down with one of the most talented artists I know.

For the unfamiliar, this is @abewillows

He recalls upon an eye-opening moment along his artistic journey and reminds us that not everything is what it appears to be. Even those we consider as legends and icons struggled one way or another.

I hope this serves as a reminder that the road to glory is NEVER as clean and easy as they’ll make it seem.

Keep falling and keep getting back up. Fortify your vision as the only reality you know.

a week since inanity. inanity (according to the cambridge dictionary) is the quality of being extremely silly or having no real meaning or importance, or something that is extremely silly - but it is also defined as a nonsensical remark or action. the first half of this year was painfully absurd emotional and physical rollercoaster. some parts of the ride made no sense, the twists and turns instilled a fears that perhaps I had no space for art in my life. I thought that this year I probably wouldn’t participate in any shows or even finish or create new art from the time I’ve devoted to practicing the pure enjoyment that is part of the act.

realizing that there are kind, genuine individuals also in tow of this rollercoaster whose presence teases out silliness, humor, spontaneity and acts of love big and small alleviated many nonsensical fears. timing of this show was miraculously coincidental for me personally. thank you to everyone for your support, and those who weren’t able to attend physically, your spirit was there with us! I hope those who experienced the show, gave some space for reflection (introspectively and literally in @mattresskenny’s creations!) and shared compassion viewing each piece. 💕

thank you @abewillows and @estherwillowsart - i appreciate your kinship, generosity, kindness and hospitality endlessly. I just met @mattresskenny and @goofedapparel within the past two weeks - their honest, expressive energies has been inspiring. and thanks @electriclodge for harboring a space for artists! all this collective effort, from making programs, set up, break down, laying around immersed in lights and music being bartenders and hosts, shared joy, couldn’t have been possible without y’all. thanks again! to more inanity 💕

this one’s all about the people. inanity wouldn’t have happened if @abewillows hadn’t decided to take a bunch of his own art off of the walls of @electriclodge to make room for his friends to throw a closing ceremony show to celebrate the conclusion of his show/residency ‘AGAINST DESPAIR’. a million billion thank you’s, abe! creativity and generosity are only 2 of the many things you thrive in, bröther 🫶 inanity also wouldn’t have happened without @estherwillowsart not only showing her own beautiful ceramic sculptures & a lamp that we collaborated on (it’s getting its own post, it’s the most beautiful lamp i’ve been a part of making), but esther also produced the show AND climbed around on ladders with me to help me turn the dance studio into what you got to experience. esther…THANK YOU! ♾️ inanity ALSO wouldn’t have happened if @goofedapparel wasn’t one of the brightest lights i’ve encountered and randomly became my friend at trader joe’s earlier this year. not only was goof 20% of inanity, but he invited me to the opening night of AGAINST DESPAIR in march, which is where i met and instantly befriended abe, which lead to inanity less than 4 months later. goof…YOU’RE THE MAN, thank you ❤️ inanity also wouldn’t have happened without @___keychan. i met key less than 2 weeks before the show, but on top of displaying her incredible paintings, she really played such a huge role in bringing everything together (graphics, helping coordinate, and even doing some PA style work.) i hardly even got to see key on the day of the show because she and esther spent a lot of the show time making sure people had little snacks to munch on. inanity would’ve been insanity without you key! thank you! 🫡 and lastly but not leastly, inanity wouldn’t have happened without my friends @_flewellen_ & @whois.sim allowing me to use their music as the soundtracks to my light shows, & all of you beautiful souls who came out to experience a show that 5 of us kind of threw together last minute. but also not really because it’s something we’ve all been working on in our own lives, you know? thank you again so much to everyone who came out! bigger things are coming quicker than you’d think 😗
